Letchworth State Park

Located in Castile, NY and renowned as the "Grand Canyon of the East," Letchworth State Park is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern U.S. Household pets are welcome to join you on their dog-friendly trails as long as they are on a leash no longer than six feet and have proof of a current rabies inoculation. For an easy out-and-back trail near Mount Morris, check out the Dam Overlook Trail. Or, challenge yourself to a moderate trail that leads to stunning views on the Inspiration Point and Lower Falls via Gorge Trail. Pets are not permitted in bathing areas, buildings, cabins or camping loops 300, 400, 500, 600 and 800. There is a two-pet maximum for campers. Visit Website

    Beautiful park!

We enjoyed the trails and the different sceneries. The park looks really nice during fall! We too some nice pictures and met many dogs! Definitely recommend visiting!

    Great first hike!

Our 9-month-old golden retriever had her first hike here! It’s a perfect area to expose your dog to light elevation and tighter trails while still being mostly easy and accessible for all ages (dogs and people). We can’t wait to come back here with her!

    No water access?

There are six entrances to the park (Castile, Portageville, and others). Portageville entrance is closed during winter. Opens at 6am. It seemed like the park does not charge an entrance / vehicle fee after a certain time (maybe five pm???), But is open until 11pm. Lots of steps and hills. Gravel, dirt, or sometimes paved walkways. Old forest growth (some of the oldest left in the country) providing shade on many of the trails (ex., Inspiration Overlook Point). Water fountains and restrooms at multiple parking lot areas. A couple of snack shops - middle falls was cash only, but lower falls took cards. The lower falls was also a little market for campers and is near some of the cabins inside the park. Plenty of picnic tables and spots for a beautiful meal. The only downside was that it seemed like none of the trails allowed you to get close to any water (?). If you're looking for water access try near downtown Portageville / Genesee Falls on RT 436 (aka Portage St) past the Genesee Falls Inn (and it's free) and over the bridge onto the north side of the river.

Come for the hikes and paws for the views

Awesome variety of trails both in views and difficulties. Spent a lovely long weekend hiking and just relaxing on a blanket. If you are going trek some of the more woodsy, less travelled trails, do not forget the tick protection for your dog or the bug spray for you. All trails extremely well blazed and marked.

    Great Views!

The view and the drive through the park is beautiful. There’s a LOT of stairs around the “good parts” of the park so it was a little much for my small dogs. Great photo op though!
