Fort Gaines

Dogs are welcome to join their owners at Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island, AL. The famous phrase, “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead," was first shouted by Admiral Farragut during the Battle of Mobile Bay at this very spot. The fort has original cannons, a blacksmith shop, kitchens, a museum, gift shop, and tunnels. Leashed dogs are welcome and you must clean up after them. Fort Gaines is open every day of the week from 9am to 5pm. The fee for entry into the park is $4 for children aged between 5 to 12 and $8 for adults over 13. Visit Website

    Excellent Experience!

It’s not everyday that you get to explore a historic fort with your pooch. Fort Gaines is it! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The fort is beautiful and of significance to the Civil War. There are artifacts and the tour is self-paced (air-conditioned museum) but mostly reliant on sea breezes. Bring your camera and your leash. Lots of fun-don’t miss it! ( ps-next to dog-friendly beach).
