    Fort Gaines

    Dogs are welcome to join their owners at the pet-friendly Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island, AL. The famous phrase, “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead," was first shouted by Admiral Farragut during the Battle of Mobile Bay at this very spot. The fort has original cannons, a blacksmith shop, kitchens, a museum, gift shop, and tunnels. Leashed dogs are welcome, with the request that you clean up after them. Visit Website

      Awesome experience

      This is such a an amazing place to visit with your pooch! Every single part of it is dog friendly including the museum. The staff was wonderful and the fort is really well preserved with quite an impressive number of artifacts. This place way exceeded my expectations.

      What a great outing with the Pups

      Super fun place to go with your dogs.
      What a great amount of history and my girls LOVED exploring in all the rooms.
      Definitely a must do

      Perfect Spot to bring your pup!

      Fort Gaines is very dog friendly! The staff is very nice! They only ask for you to keep your pup on a leash and to pick up after them. The pups can go into any building, and the museum is air conditioned (great place to cool off in!). There are a lot of sand spurs, so I suggest shoes for your pup if you have them. we had a great time and will definitely be bringing our pup back!

      Great Historic Fort

      This is a well preserved fort at the entrance to Mobile Bay. It played a key Civil War role in the defense of Alabama. The wall is mostly intact and various rooms used by its residents are on display in the courtyard. Take a leisurely self guided tour and enjoy the views of the Gulf. It's dog friendly, too.

      Excellent Experience!

      It’s not everyday that you get to explore a historic fort with your pooch. Fort Gaines is it! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The fort is beautiful and of significance to the Civil War. There are artifacts and the tour is self-paced (air-conditioned museum) but mostly reliant on sea breezes. Bring your camera and your leash. Lots of fun-don’t miss it! ( ps-next to dog-friendly beach).
