Dunbar Cave State Park

Dunbar Cave, located in Clarksville, TN, is a remarkable prehistoric site, not just for Tennessee but for the entire Eastern Woodlands. This 144-acre pet-friendly attraction has been used for thousands of years and is the site of significant prehistoric Mississippian Native American cave art dating to the 14th century. Leashed dogs are welcome in all outdoor areas, but are not permitted in any buildings. Visit Website

    Not anymore!

It’s Saturday morning at 11:53 AM on 2 September 2023, and though my dog and I have frequently walked at Dunbar Cave and gone inside the visitor center together, today for the first time, we were denied entry. There was no sign posted, and when I pointed this out, he said, “No sign, it’s just vocal.” If a state park is going to change the rules, then the change should be published in advance and signs posted that inform the public about the upcoming changes so that they are aware. To my knowledge, this didn’t happen. Therefore, I found it rather rude and disappointing. This may have been the arbitrary decision of one person on one day, but now you know. I would give the park a 5 otherwise. We did walk around the park unmolested, however, so dogs are still allowed outside. The shady trails ending at a cave mouth that’s a perfect cool down spot redeems the No-dogs-allowed experience somewhat.

    Fascinating place!

The cave emits 50* temp air to cool a person off in the warm seasons. This is why it was so popular for social gatherings in a time before AC was the norm.
Leashed dogs are welcome outside of the cave (not sure about the guided tour of the cave itself), along the walking trails, and even in the visitor center. The outside areas and visitor center are free, but there is a cost to tour the inside of the cave. My two Cavies thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the attention lavished on them by the rangers!
