Rock Island Rail Trail

The Rock Island Rail Trail is one of 1600 rail-trails supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that is working to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Previously an unused railroad corridor, this "rail-trail" is now a great place to walk Fido in Amarillo! The map below shows a trailhead where you can pick up the Rock Island Rail Trail. Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has generously provided map data for this trail to Bring Fido for informational purposes only. For more detailed trail information, please visit TrailLink.com. Not Bad

The trail is an old railroad track that has been converted and paved over. It is well maintained. The pavement is smooth. Grass is cut along the path. It runs behind the back of some not so well kept residential housing. I did not walk the whole trail..just from Coulter out East a couple miles then back. It was pretty vacant on a beautiful Friday afternoon. It doesn't seem to be very popular with the locals. I was in from out of town, so it was great to have some dog walking near my hotel, but other than that, nothing to write home about. Back in Iowa, I'm used to bussling converted rail roadways through beautiful neighboorhoods with mature trees next to the trail. So, I have to compare and say it didn't live up to my expetations. But again, much better than walking by the I-40 traffic by my hotel.
