Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park is one of San Francisco's most popular pet-friendly parks. There are four separate off-leash areas: the southeast section between Lincoln Way, King Drive and 2nd and 7th Avenues; the Northeast section at Stanyan and Grove Streets; the Southcentral area between King Drive, Middle Drive, and 34th and 38th Avenues; and the Golden Gate Park Dog Training Area. Bring Fido to explore one or all four parks for a day of fun and exercise. Visit Website

    Booboo’s Favorite Place!

Bruno and I can walk to this Dogpark from my place (about 5 blocks). He is a “medium sized dog” (50 lbs), so he has fun at both the small dog area and the big dog/all dogs area. There are a lot of locals at this Dog Park! and I consider my Dog and myself among them. We are friendly and welcome all responsible/respectful dogs and their humans. You are not required to socialize, but the opportunity is there if you so desire. A couple weeks ago, Bruno and I visited this facility and entered the “Big Dog/All Dogs Area.” Soon, one particular dog kept trying to hump my dog. I determined the owner and said, “Is that your dog, the humper?” He replied, “Yes”, and laughed. The behavior continued - aimed only at Bruno. I removed my dog, picked him up and muttered. As I walked over to the adjacent play area, I heard, “What did you say?” Now, keep in mind, I pointed out the fact that I was unhappy with my dog being harassed and subjected to unwanted animal/instinctual behavior. However, the owner kept laughing and refused to pull his dog off of mine. I spoke out of anger. As I was followed out of the dog pen, I let Bruno down and he ran off to play with his “new pals”, oblivious to the angry mob of wannabe hipsters that gathered close to me (separated by a 4 ft. tall, chain-link fence). “Did he touch your dog?”, one guy asked. “I woulda kicked him, if he did”, said the same guy. Now, remember, I said only 10-words and not even to that guy. You woulda thought this was the most exciting thing to happen to this crowd all week! They couldn’t stop pontificating at me, until I walked away, out if earshot. Then, they tried to follow me and passive aggressive me to death. Long story long, Bruno had a great time, we stayed away for a week, and now I’ve made my point. Although “humping” might be an animalistic behavior, it’s not acceptable to let your dog carry out in this manner. Have respect for other dogs, humans and yourself.

    Great Park, Hard to Find

The fenced area is a great dog park, but insanely difficult to find. The address to enter into Google maps is 969 36th Ave. San Francisco, CA 94122. This will bring you right to the fenced area parking lot. Would recommend bringing own waste bags but there are doggie water fountains available. There are 2 areas, small & large dog areas. The park is spacious and clean.

Best dog park in San Francisco!

As far as dog parks in big cities go, this is one of the best! A large enclosed area inside Golden Gate Park (you can drive right to it, there's a parking lot right in front of the park) that's almost always full of friendly dogs. There's a larger area for big dogs (though our small/medium Cockapoo gets along great) - it's almost all dirt, so expect to bring home a happy and dusty dog, and it's got large tree stumps and rocks to climb all over. The small dog area is still pretty big and has more grassy areas as well as a picnic table and benches. Lots of regulars, so a great place for dogs and humans alike to make friends.

    Lucky Dogs!

Golden Gate Park is really a nice park with lots of green space for picnics or for a walk around the lake (except for the massive flock of mangy seagulls.) The fenced in sandy/astroturf dog park had benches for owners, lots of balls, water fountain & water bowls. There is one section for smaller dogs and one for bigger dogs (connected by a gate in case little dogs want to play with big dogs). The dogs today looked happy to run around together.

    Where the locals go

The fully fenced-in area at Fulton & 38th (it's right by the bison field) is our favorite park in the city. (Well, it's also the closest.) You want to make sure you go in the late afternoon, after all the dog walkers leave and the locals show up, because that's when you meet the owners who really care about their dogs, pay attention, socialize with other dog owners, etc. If you go earlier, closer to lunchtime on weekdays, there are so many dogs with dog walkers that there's no room for the dogs to run around, and the dog walkers are kind of cliquey. Typically there are lots of tennis balls around to play with, as well as (often) other toys. By far the best part of this park is the fact that it's fully fenced in, so there's no danger of your dog running off.

Good large fenced area, occasional bad owners.

It's bigger than a soccer field. It's mainly the dirt/sand you will find in the Sunset. Most of the owners are responsible.

Unfortunately at this point (4/15/15) there is a woman that brings a dog that attacks other dogs WITHOUT warning.

It is a young Husky mix (brindleish) with one blue and one brown eye.

My dog (which is a Pit mix) was fixated on a ball and had never met this dog before. This woman when she showed up took both the leash and the collar off the dog as soon as she entered. This dog went straight as an arrow at full speed and attacked my dog, who defended herself.

I stepped into the melee and broke it up. The woman that owned the attacking dog did nothing to calm the situation. I had to drag my dog to a gate while letting her face backwards to fend off the attacks for about 50 ft.

The whole time she did nothing.

After I got my dog away, and we walked around to where I was parked and she was busy texting she said to me that her dog was only playing.

Tell that to my dog with the two cuts on her cheek, and who has since been short with other dogs.

    Great Park in SF

This is a wonderful park for both owners and dogs alike. I never found the "fenced" area but the walk from the inland to the beach area is wonderful.

    Great Fenced Area

The fenced dog area near Fulton & 38th was great for our puppy. One corner of the area was a little muddy but otherwise the sand makes for quick cleanup of dirty paws. No grass though. Lots of bigger dogs but there were no issues.
