Walt Whitman Trail

The dog-friendly Walt Whitman Trail is a historic hike at West Hills County Park that will take about 2 hours to complete with Fido in Melville, NY. Aside from the moderate climb to the 400-foot Jaynes Hill, this hike is relatively flat. Horses also frequent this park; you should watch out for them as you hike. Visit Website

    Yucky

There was dog and horse poop when I visited the trail. When I arrived home, I found two ticks on my dog. I am never going back there again.

Nice quiet trails, variable length hike

I was apprehensive from the reviews below but on a Friday morning in spring, the horse poop situation was not that bad.

The trails are not terribly well marked—adequately, at best—but there are some trails in the woods that the horses are not permitted on, and these are generally pretty clear of manure. (These tend to be the narrower, winding paths, rather than the flat, wider trails. I also think most of the trail marked with the white trailheads was horse-free from where I picked it up on Reservoir, but not all of it.)

Because there are so many different short trails that cross through the park, you can really customize the length of your walk by making a loop. I parked near the trailhead on Reservoir Rd and made a loop of about 3mi, but it easily could have been a lot longer or shorter.

My cell signal was in and out, but I was generally able to navigate by Google Maps, which helped a lot, since the trails were not always well marked.

    Horse poop everywhere!

I had no idea until I actually got to the trail that those trails were for horses!
There were literally horse poop every 10 feet or even less.It was not a easy hike with my dog at all. Finally towards the middle of the hike, i see a trail which had "NO HORSE" sign. They even made the gate so horses would not go on. I was so excited but then got turned down right away. There were still horse poop EVERYWHERE! I donno what kind of people where on those horses but clearly they have no common sense and very inconsiderate. Some parts were a bit steep, and just to imagine that someone actually made those horses go up and down this trail made me so angry!!! Poor horses.... :(

    Good short hike

This area has a couple of different trails that are all short and have no crazy inclines on them. I find it to be a great place to bring my pup who loves to go on hikes as its easy for her and I to do.
