Coontree Loop Trail

Bring Fido along for a walk on the Coontree Loop Trail in Brevard, NC. It's a moderately easy, 3.7 mile hike in Pisgah National Forest that will take about 2 hours to complete with Fido. Fall on this trail offers a cornucopia of color as the leaves changes color, and early spring affords the opportunity to see ridge-top views through trees that have not yet bloomed. Please note that dogs must be leashed between April 1 and August 15, but must be under voice control at all times. Visit Website

    Steeo with sharp drops

June 2012. The elevation change is round 1200 ft and steep with distance of 3.7 miles. You do the math. It took us 4 hours to complete as we got caught in the rain on the ridge. So we weren't able to see the views mentioned elsewhere. The maps rate this trail as moderate but at the trailhead it is marked More Difficult. And for us that was an accurate description. The trail is well marked with blue blaze and for a short while parallels Bennett Gap trail. It was welcomed relief though to reach the ridge where is levels out some. Because it was raining it was a hazardous slippery decent. The area offers a pleasant diverse environment. Drop offs are sharp in many parts of the trail. Dogs should be very seasoned hikers. Several stream crossings with log bridges in very good condition. We didn't spot any wildlife to speak of not even one snake. We didn't see any other hikers this day.
