The Monon Trail is one of 1600 rail-trails supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that is working to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Previously an unused railroad corridor, this "rail-trail" is now a great place to walk Fido in Indianapolis! The map below shows a parking area with convenient access to the Monon Trail. Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has generously provided map data for this trail to Bring Fido for informational purposes only. The Monon is the perfect place for a long walk!

  • More than one year ago.

This is a black-topped walking trail amid scenery that varies depending on which section of the trail you choose. I like areas with some shade and some wildflowers, my little dog likes that too because there are more dog scents to take in. We do a mile down and a mile back. There are frequent mile markers, for the benefit of dog owners and the other walkers and the bicyclists. Of course you can't forget your leash with all those possible encounters! But the traffic is civilized - no one's going to take aim and run you down. Many people are genial - many are "plugged in" and don't greet you. ......... Since this goes right through the city, there are convenient places to buy refreshments. ....... Poop bags and trash barrels are provided, and in summer there are occasional porta-potties for humans "caught short" away from other facilities. Good parking. It's a great part of our repertoire of walks.
