Reviews
Visitors generally praise Burkes Beach as a great, pet-friendly destination. They highlight the clean and well-maintained facilities, ample parking, and open spaces for dogs to run and play. Some travelers caution about the off-leash policy, noting that not all owners have full control over their pets, which could be an issue for those with reactive dogs.

- JasmineApr 17, 2024Great Dog beach!
This was a great place for pup’s first time at the beach. We will be coming back again! I confirmed with the on-beach security and any length leash is okay. Location: It was located very close to our hotel and in a good neighborhood next to beautiful Marriott beach condos and a park. Crowd/people: Light to medium crowd on a Tuesday afternoon and most people kept their noise level down and had good control of their dogs. Vagus received a lot of good attention on our walks. Everyone was very friendly and it was not rowdy at all. Cleanliness: Very, very clean and people actively make sure to “leave no trace”. There are even little baskets to help you pick up your trash. Parking: There is free parking at Chaplain Community Park and then it’s a quick walk to the beach access point. Be careful along that path because there are alligators in the marshy area next to the beach (there is a sign warning you and we saw one in the water). Amenities: restrooms are located in the parking lot. There are two showers to wash off, and a hose which helps for dogs. There is a pole with poop bags in case you forgot your own, you can rent beach chairs (but no umbrellas), and there is a bin with free “loaner” beach toys that you put back after your beach day. WARNING: gators on the walking path to the beach (we walked in the road instead) and tons of jellyfish were washed up onto the shore line which created a small in some areas and a hazard for little explorative puppies.
- KarynApr 14, 2024Love this beach, don’t love the off leash dogs
Love this spot, great parking that has lots of shade, nice bathrooms and an area to shower the sand off, quiet area of beach. Downside is quite a few off leash dogs, some with good owners and great recall which doesn’t bother us but unfortunately lots of people who have no control over their dogs nor do they care to come get them. We love it and still go, just a word of caution for other parents of reactive dogs!
- RobertMar 12, 2024Maple and patch first beach
Great beach easy access with free parking. Our dogs love running free chasing each other. Few other dogs but not crowded. Will be back
- LaurenJun 4, 2022Nice Quiet Beach
Easy and free parking lot with a nice walk to the beach. There is also a dog park near this beach that you can access from the same parking area. Beach is nice and quiet perfect for dogs that are a little more anxious. Thoroughly enjoyed our time here.
- ReneeMay 13, 2022Awesome memories
the perfect opportunity to take your pup to the beach! Easy parking, short walk to beach. For a mid May visit, it was not crowded and everything we could have asked for a beach trip with Theodore
- SaraMar 31, 2022Great dog friendly beach!
we LOVED this beach! Free public parking at Chaplin park (5 minute walk from the parking lot to the waters edge). during the off season, dogs were allowed off leash. we will be back!
- HeatherAug 15, 2021Beach
Nice beach. Pet friendly in the evening (after 5). Good amenities. Pretty busy spot
- BrookeJun 27, 2021Disappointing
This beach is NOT pet friendly all the time. We drove over an hour only to be turned away since it was during “specific” hours. We went to Fish Haul Beach instead and the pups had a blast!
- PennyMay 31, 2021No dogs on holidays
no dogs on holidays. the rest of the time it is before 10 and after 5. ruined beach trip
- JessicaMay 19, 2021Took our 3 dogs
Great location for beach access and parking. Public bathrooms near too. No problem finding a close parking spot and the dogs had a blast. It was my youngest dogs first time at the beach they all had a great time.
- MorganApr 10, 2021Very pet friendly
We went here for the first time with our bi-eye husky and it was wonderful! Everyone was friendly including the security officers. All dogs were leashed and obedient.
- MelanieDec 27, 2019Perfect Pet Friendly Spot
We go to this beach often with our Brittany. He loves running in the surf and chasing seagulls. This leash policy is not strictly enforced and we let him loose to run.
- EricMay 11, 2019Beautiful
So pretty. Some dogs were on leash and some were off, so it's not a good place for reactive dogs. But if your dog is good with other sotd, it's a super dog friendly beach!
- KellyFeb 23, 2019Great Beach
Django enjoyed his first ocean encounter. Met some friendly dogs, rolled in some smelly seaweed and sampled the water (yuk!).
- MistyJul 20, 2018Picture perfect!!!
My German Shepherd Link and I met our beach photographer here for a morning session, at the photographer's suggestion, and Link loved it! The pictures are stunning!!! It has plenty of places for pictures, and dogs were enjoying themselves. Most had their dogs on a leash even though it was during doggie hours, and this was nice to not be approached by random dogs. Overall great experience!!!
- MaureenMore than a year agoon-leash hours
FYI dogs must be on leash after 10am from April 1 (not Memorial Day)
- JenniferMore than a year agoFun Beach
Such a great large beach for my dog to run!! I took her there twice today!! And you can park for free at the park parking lot about 50 feet from the metered beach parking!
- CindyMore than a year agogreat experience
As long as your dog behaves and you understand other dogs are running off leash it’s the greatest experience ever! Some people don’t want your dog to come say hi..... that’s just what dogs do!
- AnnMore than a year agoFun even for a brief visit
Very clean parking area (bring quarters), trail to the dunes and beach itself. Ours was a brief visit, but it was very nice.
- Olivigni3More than a year agogreat off season
Great beach for dogs. Our boxer, Tucker, loved it. Off season dogs are allowed at any time.
- RileyMore than a year agoGreat Day!
We took Rory here for his first time at the beach and he had a blast running around and playing fetch! It was very clean and dog friendly.
- DawnMore than a year agoGreat Beachto take Dogs!
We took our dogs to the beach for the first time.burkes beach was very nice!
- StephanieMore than a year agoEasy access
Parking on Burkes was easy, just a short walk to the beach at marker #98 (important) to remember when you return). Our dogs had a great time on leash in the ocean and other dogs were also well behaved. A big after 5PM is perfect as the day crowd thins out and the evening crowd does come until 7PM.
- ChrisMore than a year agoHad a blast! But beware of sea water.
This was the first time we brought either of our dogs to a beach. We didn't know what to expect! But right off the bat, I'd say if there's no parking close to the entrance, you can park at the community park right next to it and there's a little path you can shortcut to the beach entrance. When we got to the beach there were a few people, it is summer after all, but not a whole lot. We saw kids and we were worried that the dogs would be overly friendly if we let them off leash. But quickly we realized there were a bunch of other dogs off leash and no one seemed to mind! Not even parents with kids. So we let them off and boy did they play. I've never seen my dogs so happy!
However, I do want to warn pet owners to keep an eye on your furry friends, one of ours ingested wayyyy too much sea water and became very sick today. Make sure you watch them and BRING YOUR OWN FRESH WATER! Other that that general rule, it was nice and cool but that water was still warm, the people were so great and we had a blast too. :) oh! And there is a little shower at the entrance along with a station with doggie bags for poop. Grab a few!!! - KerriMore than a year agoFun!
This is a great beach for dogs! They can roam free and swim and it's the closest beach for dogs to Savannah. It's also a beautiful scenery with parks and a dog park nearby if the beach isn't your dogs thing. Other than the time restrictions during the summer, which I think is fine as it's too hot to be out there anyways, this is a beach we visit frequently!
- SarahMore than a year agoNo Dogs During Peak Season
Beautiful beach and I'm sure it is amazing when it isn't peak season or is before 10 or after 5. We drove over from Tybee today as they don't allow dogs either...we are a bit bummed.
- ChristyMore than a year agoHilton Head Island
Hilton Head is by far the best beach for your four legged friend. We went in September and we didn't have to keep her on a leash. She loved the beach so much. We were able to enjoy it as well with her off of a leash.
- Bob HarmonMore than a year agoGreat Weekend.
Was just at Chaplin Dog Park then went to Burkes Beach. Got 2 Labs that had never been to a park or Beach before. They had a Blast. Playing in the Surf and Jogging with me on the Beach. I would recommend this place highly. Just need to take restrictions off. The people at the beach seem to enjoy seeing the dogs playing on the beach, as long as the dogs are well behaved.

Went on April 1 so dogs had to be on leash from 10-5. Great beach with lots of dogs walking.
- Janice AMore than a year agoGreat Experience
Wonderful experience and perfect for the dog. And if you can control your dog, they are permitted to be off leash during the appropriate times which are posted. My guy had a great time.
- KarlaMore than a year agoPERFECT
This beach is perfect for dogs. We walked down this beach and got to an area where my dog could play and wouldn't bother everyone. Lots of people came up to him and petted him and also many other dogs played with him. Cookie loved the water and enjoyed the sun. We brought some fresh water with his travel bowl of course. Can't wait to go back!
- SethMore than a year agoPerfect Afternoon
We had such a lovely afternoon with our two dogs. We went in early November and were thus able to have them off leash during mid-day. It was quiet: we met only a few other people while walking and only one other dog. Our pups were able to romp essentially unrestricted. The sand was nice and soft and the beach is clean with little debris. There is a short path to the beach through the dunes, which our dogs loved exploring. There is a shower station at the parking lot. There are parking meters at the beach access point but just around the corner is a park with ample free parking.

Burke's beach - got auto corrected!
- LaurenMore than a year agoGreat day!
We had a wonderful time at burlesque beach today with our two chocolate labs. This site said that you could have your dogs there all day after Labor Day. The sign said October through march but since its mid October we were ok. There was only one other dog there and my two girls had a ball playing in the water. There's even a shower to rinse them off after. Make sure you bring plenty of fresh water with you. Thank you for this website because I would never of found this beach. So many people walking by stopped to play with our dogs and throw the ball to them. Great beach!
- RykerMore than a year agoGreat beach
It was a great beach to introduce our dog to the ocean for the first time. You are supposed to have your dog on a leash, but we didn't see one dog there on one. There is plenty of room to run and play, and small river that runs in from the ocean. Everyone in the are seemed to understand that it was a "dog beach" as most of the blankets/umbrellas/sun-bathers/etc. were further up or down the beach. There is the time restrictions as mentioned by Erin, but going after 5pm still gives you plenty of time in the water.

08/12 - I just spent the weekend at Hilton Head with my dogs and Burkes Beach was where we spent most of our time. Dogs are allowed on the beach before 10 AM and after 5 PM - if there were no limitations I would have given it 5 stars.
The water was warm, the tide was just right and the dogs had a blast.
