The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to over 800 miles of hiking trails, but take note that dogs are NOT allowed on most of them. They are welcome on the Gatlinburg Trail (a 1.9 mile hike from the Sugarland Visitor Center to the outskirts of Gatlinburg, TN) and the Oconaluftee River Trail (a 1.5 mile hike from the Oconaluftee Visitor Center to the outskirts of Cherokee, NC). Dogs are also allowed in the campgrounds, picnic areas, and along roads, but must be kept on a leash at all times. As with most parks, your pets should be well-behaved and you should always clean up after them.
Pet Friendly Waterrock Knob Trail in Sylva, NC
Waterrock Knob Trail is a difficult, 1.2 mile hike on the Blue Ridge Parkway that will take about 1 hour to complete with Fido. With the steep elevation on this trail you will want to be sure your dog can climb and maneuver over large rocks. Please note that dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.

Rufus Morgan Falls Trail is a moderately easy, 1 mile hike in Nantahala National Forest that will take about 40 minutes to complete with Fido. This little out of the way trail is a lovely spot that has soft ground and several water sources for Fido. Please note that dogs must be on a leash between April 1 and August 15, but must be under control at all times.
