- AmandaMore than a year agoTons of fun! But...
I attended the 2008 and 2009 picnics with my mother and my two doxies, and we had a blast! Hundreds of dogs, 99.99% of them well-behaved and well-mannered. Every color, size, and type of doxie you can imagine is at this picnic! Friendly people too! If you love doxies, you are almost certain to have lots of fun! The location is absolutely beautiful too, very large, and extremely clean! And there are lots of vendors selling great doxie goods, and several doxie rescue organizations attend as well (it's a good chance to support them by buying a few raffle tickets, and you can even check out some of their dogs who need to be adopted!).
My one complaint...there is a complete and total lack of organization and direction. We have experienced this both years we have attended. No one really seems to know what's going on with the events, the events that do take place are not organized well at all, and the schedule is constantly changed or not stuck to. Even the organizers themselves often do not seem to know what's going to happen when. For example, when the scheduled time for the group photo came and went, we asked two of the organizers when it was going to be taken. They looked at each other and couldn't even agree if it had been decided IF one was going to be taken this year (despite it being on the schedule), and if it was, WHEN it was going to be taken. After a few minutes, they told us that it was definitely going to be taken later in the day (even though the scheduled time had long since passed without a word about a delay or a change). In the end, it was never taken at all. The costume contest is the same sort or crazy disorganized mess. It is frustrating, because this event could be so much more than it is. The turnout is always great and it is a fun treat for doxie lovers and their doxies, but the lack or organization really brings it down a notch. I realize that the folks who organize this event are volunteers, and I definitely appreciate all of the work and effort that goes into putting this event on every year, but I can't help but be frustrated at how confusing and disorganized things are. It's annoying to have a NEO Dachshund Picnic schedule in your hands and know that it doesn't mean much.
Despite the organizational issue that keeps this picnic from being truly perfect, we will definitely be attending next year. I just got back from 2009's picnic, and I'm already looking forward to 1010's! It's a definitive much-do for doxie parents and their furry "kids!"

We had a great time at the picnic last year. We told many new doxie owners to come and were glad to see them there. Our dogs were a little shy but seemed to be having fun until the downpour! Can't wait to go this year.
