Rattlesnake, Porcupine and Skunk Avoidance Training

The Idaho Chukar Foundation and Idaho Humane Society offer classes each year that are designed to teach dogs to avoid the sight, sound and smell of rattlesnakes, porcupines and skunks. Experienced dog handlers will work with your dog one-on-one and focus on your dog’s reaction and body language to a snake, porcupine or skunk. The session takes about 15 minutes depending on the dog, though most dogs learn the avoidance behavior quickly. NOTE: A dog can be registered for ONLY ONE training session – rattlesnake, porcupine or skunk. Veterinarian behavioral canine science has indicated that a second training session within the same day or week is too much stimulation for one dog. • Register for rattlesnake avoidance training: https://idahohumanesociety.wufoo.com/forms/rattlesnake-avoidance-training-2017/ The class is $60. A second dog owned by the same family may be added for $50 and any additional dogs are $30. Please note that no refunds are available. • Register for rattlesnake avoidance refresher training: https://idahohumanesociety.wufoo.com/forms/rattlesnake-avoidance-refresher-2017/ If you have participated in rattlesnake avoidance training organized by ICF and IHS with your dog in the past, the same dog(s) may sign up for a refresher course between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. for $30. • Register for porcupine avoidance training: https://idahohumanesociety.wufoo.com/forms/porcupine-avoidance-training-2017/ The class is $40 per dog. • Register for porcupine avoidance refresher training: https://idahohumanesociety.wufoo.com/forms/porcupine-avoidance-refresher-2017/ If you have participated in the porcupine avoidance training organized by ICF and IHS with your dog in the past, the same dog(s) may sign up for a refresher course for $25. • Register for skunk avoidance training: https://idahohumanesociety.wufoo.com/forms/skunk-avoidance-training-2017/ The class is $30 per dog. • If you would like to pay with a method other than credit card, you can register at the Idaho Humane Society, 4775 Dorman St. The shelter store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.

Rattlesnake Avoidance Classes for Dogs

For those who enjoy the outdoors with your dogs or those living in homes backed up to hillsides and in rural areas, rattlesnakes can be a great risk to your dog requiring emergency medical care and the cost involved can rise quickly. Rattlesnake avoidance training will teach your dog to avoid the sight, sound and the smell of a rattlesnake once they become aware of one to give you peace of mind and potentially save both you and your dogs' life by alerting you to the presence of a rattlesnake. We always like to offer a variety of local venues for our returning R.A.T. community. This gives the dogs the opportunity to generalize their training. Also for first time dogs we recommend having them trained twice the first season (at two different venues) then once annually thereafter to optimize their learning. Pre-Registration Required

28th World's Ugliest Dog Contest

The old saying “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is exemplified at the World’s Ugliest Dog® Contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, CA. The internationally observed event celebrates homely hounds and the humans who love them. For 28 years, the Contest has been a testament that all dogs do not have to meet AKC pedigree standards to be man’s (or woman’s) best friend. The owners of all kinds of dogs are also all kinds of people, from youngsters to senior citizens, each proud of their pet despite missing fur, crossed eyes, duck waddles or mismatched ears. They proudly walk both pedigreed pooches and Heinz 57 mutts down the red carpet to the cheers and clapping of the crowd. Prior to arriving for the contest, all the dogs must provide a veterinarian’s paperwork asserting that they are healthy. The World’s Ugliest Dog® Contest follows up with a vet check on-site just prior to the contest. The Sonoma Humane Society is also on site with information showcasing adoptable pets. A good many of the contestant dogs have been rescued from shelters and puppy mills and the contest has done much to raise awareness for adoption of dogs, and that no matter their physical detractions, these animals are loving companions. And the dogs certainly seem to enjoy the adoration of the fans. The annual World’s Ugliest Dog® Contest is not about making fun of “ugly” dogs, but having fun with some wonderful characters and showing the world that these dogs are really beautiful! We are putting the finishing touches on the entry form and will get that to you ASAP along with more detailed information about this year’s contest.

The 13th annual “Horse and Hound” Wine Festival

Enjoy wine from some of Virginia’s finest wineries while listening to good music and visiting art, craft and food vendors. Virginia’s most unique wine festival has numerous events throughout the day with horses and dogs as the primary attractions such as the Parade of Horses, lure course and mus krat racing. Families will enjoy this festival because it appeals to both young and old and we have a Kiddie Korral. The event takes place on the spacious and gracious grounds of Johnson’s Orchards & Peaks of Otter Winery 1218 Elmos Rd, Bedford Va 24523 with spectacular Blue Ridge mountain views. 11am-6pm Patriotic Opening At noon we will have our Patriotic Opening with the presentation of flags on horseback, pledges and anthems. This is a very impressive event. Lure Coursing There will be a demonstration of Lure Coursing given by Laura Cormier. Lure coursing is a humane sport which recreates the chase of the hare by the pursuing hound. The "bunny" consists of strips of white plastic attached to a continuous loop line that runs through a series of pulleys to simulate the zigzag path of a rabbit on the run Muskrat Races This event uses the Jack Russell Terrier's highly developed prey drive to swim through water in pursuit of an artificial lure. Dogs of all shapes and sizes are invited to swim across the pond in pursuit of an artificial lure. There will be three divisions of competition: small, medium, and large dogs. The winner in each division will receive a trophy. Parade of Horses The Horse parade will continue to be a crowd pleaser with a wide variety of horses to be exhibited. Kiddie Korral Supervised activities for children simulating rodeo games and quiet games as well throughout the day. Supervision by the staff and volunteers of Brook Hill Farm Rehabilitation and Rescue Part of the proceeds will benefit 501-3c organizations that benefit horses and dogs and are The Campbell Co.-- Bits N Pieces 4-H Horse Club, All-American Mutt Rescue, Brook Hill Farm Horse Rescue and Commonwealth Search & Rescue Review
