Description

Join us for a 2 mile walk to promote awareness of canine cancer and fundraise for cancer research to benefit both pets and people. It began with a promise to raise awareness of canine cancer one mile, one city, and one person at a time. Luke Robinson, with his dogs has walked 4,000 miles across America to fulfill the promise he made to his dog Malcolm who died from this horrible disease. The PuppyUp Foundation was formed because of the promise Robinson made years ago, to find out why dogs are getting cancer and why they are getting the same cancers that humans get. Through the PuppyUp Walks, we are building one of the largest pet and people cancer communities in the world. Thousands are walking with us to bring awareness to comparative oncology, the study of cancer in pets and people. To date, we have donated over $172,000 for a comparative oncology study of mammary tumors at Princeton University in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania. The project treats shelter dogs with mammary tumors and then studies the tissues to understand how breast cancer metastasizes in women. We have also contributed $40,000 to MIT and Harvard’s Broad Institute for studies on osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and Mast Cell Tumors. A grant of $80,000 was given to the Animal Medical Center of New York and Memorial Sloan Kettering to study transitional cell carcinoma (TCC). This is the most common type of bladder cancer diagnosed by veterinarians, and a difficult one to treat. Our scientific objectives are: 1.) Broadening our understanding of the links between human and companion animal cancer, 2.) developing new approaches to research, 3.) and funding translational cancer studies that benefit both pets and people. Now more than ever, we must continue the fight and support those with cancer, honor the friends we have lost, and walk for those we can help. PuppyUp against cancer and join us in our efforts . The PuppyUp Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization (tax id # 47-2319212) is a successor organization to 2 Million Dogs 2 Miles, Inc. (tax id # 26-3780773). - See more at: http://puppyuphollywood.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=1140960&lis=0&kntae1140960=12F6351A9D4F4B7F8FCB746A6B6D3BE7#sthash.Xgmxk4xU.dpuf
