visiting national parks with dog

we are intending to travel around australia with our beloved dog.. as we'd like to visit some national parks where apparently no dogs are allowed, we'd like to know what possibilities are there for us? can one get special permits ? has anybody travelled around the country with their pet and visited national parks? what did you do? would love to hear from you.
