Reviews
Visitors find the Publick House Historic Inn and Country Motor Lodge to be a pet-friendly and generally pleasant stay, with spacious and comfortable rooms, beautiful grounds for walking dogs, and a convenient on-site restaurant. Some guests note the rooms could use some updating, but they appreciate the overall value and welcoming atmosphere.

- PamelaNov 7, 2023Outdated But Adequate
The dog people stay at the motor lodge. It was mostly clean, room was clean but outdoors had trash around the door. The room was very large and generally comfortable but just had a "tired" feeling to it (worn carpet, old fixtures, etc.) Grounds were lovely and plenty of space to walk the dog. I would return.
- KristaNov 5, 2023Midway to Maine
We have stopped at the Publick House 3 times now as it is so convenient off the highway and a midpoint for out trip to Maine and back home. Staff are friendly, low pet fee, lots of open space and walking opportunities, and a great restaurant. Rooms are in need of updating, each with their own idiosyncrasies, but in the end, Mia loves the grounds and we get a respite.
- ElizabethNov 3, 2023Beautiful grounds!
We had a great stay at the Publick House. The room was spacious, in a bit of a need of a few upgrades, but not bad for the price and for being dog friendly. The grounds were beautiful with a lot of walking areas that are well lit at night. The location was fantastic, great restaurants and breweries near by and very close to great walking/ hiking trails. We are already talking about when we can come back.
- ThomasOct 28, 2023Nice place
A good dog place. They are welcomed.
- JaneAug 22, 2023Nice location
great place for traveling with dogs
- DianeAug 14, 2023Good for Fido
The grounds are really nice for dog walking. Both me and my dog enjoyed going for a walk except there are loads of mosquitos in morning and evening around the buildings that allow dogs. The “dog allowed” buildings are ok but probably not as nice as the other accommodations. The rooms are large, but lack mini refrigerators and microwaves. The internet was not working. Otherwise a pleasant experience.
- MichaelAug 4, 2023Old school goodness
Easy check-in. Great property. Very reasonable. On-site awesome restaurant and bakery. Rooms were quaint but very spacious. Right near Sturbridge Village too :)
- CarolynAug 3, 2023Wonderful hotel
The historical feeling of the lobby, dining room and rented room made our stay so pleasant. Our room had a balcony overlooking trees. Lots of grassy areas for the dogs. Very nice pastries for breakfast from the bakery. Would definitely stay again.
- VictoriaAug 2, 2023Okay, I guess
First of all the rooms are spacious. Very old and run down, but spacious. There were some spiders in my bed, but I killed them and that was fine - you are in the woods. Around 8 or 9 pm, I heard this noise in the room that sounded like heavy rain. I turned off the TV and realized it was coming from my bathroom and indeed it was. Water was pouring into my bathroom from the room above and I could hear someone taking a shower. I called the front desk and the response was, "Sometimes that happens when someone forgets to put the shower curtain inside the tub." Seriously?
They offered to bring towels for me to wipe it up in "a while" as the person at the front desk said she was the only person there. She showed up eventually (can't help being short staffed) and I wiped up the flood in my bathroom with the towels. Am I being oversensitive about this? I don't think so. Otherwise, nice location. The actual inn is very nice and the folks at the front desk were friendly. They give you free muffins for breakfast in their "bake shop" that looked like they came from Costco. The real pastries that are displayed in the case - you have to pay for. I purchased a scone and it was delicious. The free muffin tasted like it came from a package that had a pile of them in it.
- ShannonJul 30, 2023Big dogs allowed
Met our needs for a night while traveling with 2 big dogs. We would stay there again.
- JenJul 27, 2023Needs updating
The place is great for dogs but not so much for people. The dining room closes at 7pm for one. (Really!) Who closes a dining room at 7pm? I forgot my dog bowls and there was no place to buy more (which if you are a dog friendly place you would think they would have a little doggy shop). But I figured it out. The rooms are dark and bleak and need serious updating. The sheets were clean and the bed was comfortable so that's good. The price was cheap to reflect the space but I would do Best Western next time of any other dog friendly place in the area. The pool looked nice but I didn't have time to go in. The grounds are very nice for dogs to walk. Having poop bag stations would be a good idea too.
- MelanieJun 23, 2023Very Dog Friendly
The dog-friendly rooms are clean and spacious and a few steps away from large areas of lawn that are perfect for doggy bathroom breaks. While the rooms are old and rough around the edges, they are clean and have plenty of room for owners and dogs to spread out. They also have small balconies that are nice for sitting outside. Free coffee cake and coffee in the mornings is another perk!
- FrankJun 18, 2023Nice hotel
Nice room but no frig or microwave. Great complimentary bake goods and coffee for breakfast. Grounds were okay for walking dogs. Would have been nice to have a trail or two.
- JeanJun 8, 2023Good location
Older motor court. Was very clean, good large room. Nice restaurant on complex. Would stay again.
- KristaJun 5, 2023Mia loves it!
So hard to find a place that has room for dogs to roam. The “lodge” part of the Inn is still stuck in the 50s when it was probably built but we overlooked all of that. The bed was comfy, guests were quiet, TV worked great, and there was a balcony for our dog to hang out and watch the world. There were big open lawns for which to run and catch a ball and lots of places to explore on her walks. Plus there is a pool for the humans. We have stayed twice now and each time Mia is happy and not agitated. The Inn has a wonderful restaurant too.
- DavidMay 10, 2023Great property
Great room, beautiful grounds, very pet friendly.
- MicheleOct 24, 2022Nice place to stay if you don’t own pets
Rooms are in fair to poor condition and need a thorough cleaning. Beds need to be replaced and rooms are showing their age. The pet rooms are in a separate part of the facility and urine stains were visible.
- KerryOct 6, 2022Great location
The room was fine. In a building for dogs and their owners. So, an occasional bark was expected. The best thing was the location. Using All trails we found a beautiful dog-friendly trail 7 min away. Only problem for us was that the free breakfast was coffee and carbs.
- SANDRAOct 2, 2022Good stopping point
We love the grounds which are great if you're traveling with dogs. Beds were very comfortable.
- JulianSep 22, 2022Neat property, no coffee in room
Great places to walk dog. Did not have place to dump dog bags close to room.
- KathySep 19, 2022Great 1st Pupcation!!
It was our dog's first time in a hotel, and he did fantastic! Check -in was a breeze! The room was very spacious and clean, did NOT smell like dog which was great! The grounds were absolutely beautiful to walk our dog! Thank you for a stress free stay!
- JorgeSep 3, 2022Great place
This is my first stay here and was not sure what to expect but the property is very nice, lots of spots to walk dogs. The lodge is very nice and the bake shop is awesome. Very pet friendly and the staff was very helpful. I would stay again
- WilliamAug 21, 2022Beautiful Landscape
Room was fine, but traveling with my dog, what's really important to me is a good walk. The property is large and beautiful.
- AnnAug 6, 2022Great location Relaxed ambience
Delicious lobster& mussels in tavern. Friendly staff
- GinaJul 28, 2022Dog loved it
Acres to walk around on. On-site restaurant good for dinner and had some outside tables. Brought water for the dog while I ate. Room is older motel room with small bathroom, but clean and good beds. No coffee, microwave or fridge in room.
- DebJun 29, 2022Loved the history!
Main building was built in the 1700s! Beautiful grounds with many people out enjoying the lovely evening.
- PatriciaJun 16, 2022A must visit!
The Publick House Inn located in Sturbridge, MA was such a perfect place to stay. The pet friendly rooms in the Motor Lodge were very spacious, clean and comfortable. The old Inn is a wonderful facility and our dog was welcome to explore the grounds and sit with us at the outdoor tables. The Inn provides guests with free coffee and baked goods in the morning from their amazing bake shop. They also have a restaurant on site and it's a great venue for special events. It is located in the heart of Sturbridge village across from the town common. The rates were very reasonable for a Sunday night stay with a $25 pet fee. Lots of great historic places to explore in the area and an Antique shopper's dream!
- BethJun 10, 2022Great Stay
The room wad beautiful. Staff was awesome. Can't wait to go back!
- AnnieApr 21, 2022Excellent locale
Everyone was so friendly, everything very clean and so many amenities.
- SuzetteFeb 2, 2022New England Bliss
We arrived the day after the nor’easter, and it was completely accessible. They have a lot of room for you to walk your dog but the grassy areas were under 2 ft of snow. Room was quaint, and plenty of room for my Great Dane. The bakery is amazing, too bad they don’t make dog treats too. Everyone was really nice, and helpful.
- StephenNov 3, 2021Downgraded my room
Because 69 pound dog. No coffee in room. Not happy with BringFido.
- GailOct 24, 2021Clean & conveniently located
Beautiful historic inn with modern amenities in great location.
- LucyOct 17, 2021Great place to stay
This provides a lovely campus for dog parents. Dog friendly rooms, a lovely place to walk them on leash, two dining rooms in the inn itself, a bakery to grab a free coffee and pastries to take back to the room. Especially perfect if you've been driving a long distance. It's welcoming, pretty, great food, and loaded with convenience.
- KimOct 16, 2021Lovely Spot
This hotel was really a lovely and charming New England hotel. They have a section that is more like an old motel where you bring the dogs. Easy access in an out. There is a welcoming feel really darling town
- LouiseSep 14, 2021A good area to stop
This is a good place to stop for the night. Place was clean and had good areas for walking our pet.
- RobertAug 19, 2021Spacious rooms and nice grounds
We loved having a clean room, king sized bed and couch in room. The "Girls" loved walking everywhere and people were welcoming of the pets. Excellent pastry at the Bake Shoppe and server was so pleasant. Only negative was that there were some people who did not have their pets leashed. Nearby Wells State Park with a variety of walking trails and a picnic venue was great. We will definitely be back.
- DanielAug 10, 2021Fit the bill
If i was a picky traveler the accommodations would not have been up to par. The town was quaint and farmers market was held across the street (august) although we didn't explore because it was just a quick lay over for the last leg of our week long trip. I don't have much experience as to what to expect from a hotel "dog friendly room" but I was not shocked that the furniture, wall paper, and drapes were dated. Our pup was stung by a bee on the balcony (bees nest in AC unit). Personally I just wasn't going to use the balcony. I felt bad maintenance sprayed the nest of honey bees rather then relocation. The upgrade to Tilley House. Was great! Nice new clean room and freshly installed bath. More of what I'm used to from a stay away from home. I do feel bad to think our gain was at the expense of honey bees😒 pastry shop on premises for morning joe and limited comp pastry was nice. And have a cute patio / garden to sit and have the wake up juice. We did not eat at the restaurant associated with the Inn so no input there.
- DeborahAug 3, 2021Loved This Place!
Yes, the room & bathroom are old. BUT, the place was clean & quiet. The staff was so nice. There were endless places to walk. It felt safe & comfortable, & my dogs seemed to feel the same way, as they were much more relaxed than they had been the night before at a Red Roof Inn. They have an 80 pound weight limit, but I called the day before & they didn’t hesitate to allow my 2 much larger Bernese Mountain Dogs. The BringFido rate was $71, which would have been a bargain if not for the $25 pet fee—which covers both dogs. We had dinner in the restaurant on site, which was convenient & quite nice. I would definitely go back!
- ColinJul 17, 2021As always, a very Nice Visit
The staff was extremely courteous and helpful. When walking about the beautiful grounds, the staff would stop and have a greeting for our dog Marshall. Great Job by all especially the early riser from Putnam CT who served coffee and pastry.
- DeirdreJul 9, 2021Excellent location
Staff was very friendly and helpful. The bed was squishy and the linens were subpar. But the price was right!
- CherylJul 8, 2021Great location
Beautiful trails to walk through, everyone was super kind. We arrived late and given an upgrade 🐕
- CharlesJun 20, 2021Good Stay
The dog had plenty of grass to sniff.
- CarolMay 27, 2021Problem
No electricity due to storm so no sleep.
- SallyMay 16, 2021Good place for a dog
The units were older but clean. Super walking space.
- EllenMay 11, 2021Pretty location
Dated but CLEAN room! Everyone very nice! Good coffee and bakery! Nice area to walk dog.
- DonnaOct 7, 2020Great hotel, not the dog house
I have stayed at the Publick House quite a few times over the years. Every time always great!!! Made (Kiki) feel like she was at home. Thank you! We will be back!
- RileyOct 7, 2020Great all around!
We recently stayed at the Publick House Inn, and it far exceeded expectations. The rooms were large, quiet, and there was plenty of good grassy areas for walking our dog. I loved how accommodating and friendly they were. I will recommend to others and will definitely stay again in the future.
- JessicaSep 26, 2020Beautiful property
Rooms were lovely, comfortable and clean. Property was charming with a great bake shop and restaurant. Staff were very helpful and accommodated our pets needs.
- DavidSep 19, 2020Publick House was great!
There was plenty of room to run and play either in the woods or on the grass. We had a ball!
- CathyOct 8, 2019Great accommodations
Publick House is a great find! Excellent stay for us and our labradoodle! We will surely stay there again!
- NicoleJun 12, 2019A must place to stay!
We'll be back next year when I have a convention in Worcester, MA to go to. Clean, well appointed, friendly staff, beautifully landscaped,, convenient parking, delicious food - I can;'t say enough about this place. The pet friendly rooms are in a section that was once a motor lodge. You would never think they had pups stay in these rooms. They were clean and smelled nice. Backed against the woods, sitting on our balcony, you would have thought you were in Walden. The food in the restaurant was wonderful and the wait staff is great. Plenty of places to walk your dog in a country setting. Even with a full schedule for the Inn with 6 different events going on, you would never know it. These guys know what they are doing. And you can NOT beat the price. Tell them Biscuit sent you!
- PythonDec 31, 2018Very pet friendly
We have stayed here several times with our large dogs and they are always very pet friendly. There is grass nearby to walks the dogs. Rooms are clean and very comfortable.
