Peace Offering

This photo was taken at Muskrat Park in St. Michaels, MD. There are two cannons that sit facing the water at Muskrat Park. They make awesome photo backdrops in pictures snapped by our many visitors that come to explore St. Michaels. These two specific cannons are replicas of the originals. Jacob Gibson played a mischievous prank on the town during the war of 1812 by sailing up San Domingo Creek (on the west waterfront side of town) flying a red flag. The local militia arrived because they believed St. Michaels was being attacked by the British. Gibson’s joke didn’t go over well with the town and as a peace offering he produced two cannons to the town as an apology. Those cannons were quickly used to defend the town on August 10, 1813 when the British attacked.
