DOG WAS ATTACKED AND REQUIRED SURGERY

I have a 30 pound, 11-year-old Schnauzer named Murphy. He is a very friendly dog, that is losing his eyesight and hearing. He had been going to Waggy Tail for just about a year, maybe less. We have had a few issues, a nipped ear, kennel cough, and him coming home smelling terribly, but all-in-all the experience wasn’t terrible…. Until a few weeks ago.

I’ll set the stage a little. Waggy Tails had been keeping an aggressive dog named Sky in an individual kennel right in the main lobby. We all know it was aggressive, because the sign on the kennel said that Sky only likes the employees, please don’t pet, or interact.

Well, two weeks ago, Sky, some type of 80-100lb lab mix, viciously attacked my dog. Someone at Waggy Tails had placed Sky in the small dog pen (see attached picture) and forgotten. It just so happened that my dog was the first dog to be dropped off that day and was placed in this pen. My wife drops him off and as she is walking out the door to her car, she hears the attack. She quickly walks back inside and asks what happened.

The owner tells my wife that everything is okay, and Murphy hadn’t been injured, as she is holding her hand that is bleeding profusely. My wife is shaken and calls me, telling me what happened. She said that she heard Murphy yelping and crying but was intimidated by the owner and took her word for it.

Fast forward an hour later, we get a call from the owner saying that Murphy was indeed injured with puncture wounds. I was told it was minor and not a big deal. My wife leaves work and picks up Murphy, taking him to the veterinarian. The vet identifies deep puncture marks in Murphy’s neck/throat and advises that he will need to be sedated due to the depth of the punctures. Along with sewing up the puncture wounds, they would need to make a few more incisions to place a drainage tube (see attached picture), to help avoid infection.

The vet did a great job and sewed him up. He was given painkillers and some antibiotics and sent home that night. We avoided a terrible scenario; however, Murphy was in a lot of pain… he’s 11 years old. It was a tough week, but Murphy pulled through it and has almost fully recovered, minus some scar tissue buildup and nasty scarring.
This all happened two days before we left for ten days on our honeymoon… so not only did we lose two days of work, but we also had to pay one of my employees quite a bit of money to watch Murphy full time, as he recovered. I also had to book a new/additional flight home as I was traveling for work. He was in no shape to be boarded or be going to daycare. When I raised this concern to the owner of Waggy Tails, she threw the general liability waiver in my face and told me they were not responsible and were paying for the vet bill “out of the kindness of our hearts”…

This was GROSS NEGLIGENCE! This was not a few dogs horsing around and it got out of control. This was a KNOWN aggressive dog, that was KNOWINGLY being boarded here, and was left unattended in a pen intended for small dogs. My dog just happened to be the first one to arrive that day, and suffered the consequences.

The owners of this establishment are in over their heads, and it could have cost my dog his life.
