Traveling last minute with a large 87-pound dog in Northern California left me with little options for a hotel in the Carmel/Monterey area. Rodeway Inn Near Downtown Monterey did not have any reviews on BringFido but had great reviews on other booking sites. Thus, I took a chance and was happy I did. Dan, the on-site manager, was excellent. At check-in, he gave me a list of dog friendly restaurants, beaches, activities and emergency vet information. This is the first time a hotel has provided me with emergency vet information.
We arrived at 8 p.m. on a Tuesday, the parking lot was pretty full, and our room was a little loud at first, as we could hear our neighbors. However, by 9 p.m. everyone had settled in, and all was quiet. The air conditioner in the room provided just enough white noise to allow my dog to relax and sleep through the night. The bed was extremely comfortable; there was a small fenced in potty area on site and a paved nature trail across the street. It is also close to the beaches at Carmel, Monterey, etc.
We stayed three nights and even with the pet fee it cost less than the one night we stayed at a popular chain hotel where the bed was extremely uncomfortable. We would definitely stay here at the Rodeway Inn Near Downtown Monterey again. At checkout, Dan informed me that in a month the hotel will change its name to Carmel Hill.

When possible, I choose to stay at Homewood Suites or Home 2 Suites and have always had an excellent experience until now. At the Home2 Suites in Bakersfield, the elevator was wonky and would stop on other floors for no reason, and you had to push your floor multiple time and again once you reached it to get the doors to open. I kept thinking oh no, we are going to be stuck in the elevator. Unfortunately, my 87 pound dog has bad knees which made taking the stairs to our 3rd floor room impossible.
The bed was uncomfortable, the kitchenette sink backed up because the garbage disposal was not working, the doggy potty area had lots of dried poop stains and needed a good clean, the air conditioner struggled to cool the room down, and there was a musty smell in the hall wall. The employee at check-in was friendly but she was going to charge me for the room, even though I prepaid when I booked.
I was traveling alone with my large dog, and thus, was unable to use the pool, exercise room or try the complimentary breakfast in the morning. Thus, I cannot comment on these amenities. The room was very clean and there was a welcome message on the TV with my name on it. They did not provide any information regarding dog friendly restaurants, parks, etc., upon check-in and also did not even offer treats despite charging a $75 pet fee for one night. The room was significantly overpriced.

Chill dogs are welcome to have coffee with their owners. Owner loves dog.

Dogs are welcome and you will often find a water bowl at the entrance for the dogs. I only gave it four bones because the overhead speakers in the outdoor area are high up and intense, thus, they freak my dog out!

The room was clean, comfortable, quiet and short bike ride from the Dog Beach. The staff were all great and Crown City Inn is truly Dog Friendly. One of only two hotels on the island that allow dogs over 80 pounds. My big boy is 83 pounds but an experienced and well-behaved traveler. The hotel does not have a dog relief area but there is a small patch of grass in the front of the hotel and a large grass median across the road. We will definitely be staying at the Crown City Inn for our next trip to the Dog Beach. Also, the Crown City Bistro which is attached to the hotel has fabulous food.

My dog is 75 lbs but very well behaved. The hotel has a 50lb weight limit. I contacted the hotel and they allowed my dog to stay there. There were other large dogs staying at the hotel during our stay too. They have little good bags for the dog on check in. I loved the laminate hardword floors as my dog is allergic to dustmites. The dog relief area is small and not shaded. But there is a nice little park less than a block away. We will stay here again.
