Beware of sand spurs!
Fort Fisher State ParkFort Fisher is dog friendly all year long. We found some shade and enjoyed a picnic with our girls off of the tour path. We then parked near the beach and made our way to the beach. Along the way our older girl Jade started favoring one of her feet. I thought it might have been the hot pavement or sand, but it was three sand spurs stuck between her toes and main pad. We think she got them from going in the beach grass area. They are difficult to remove so be careful. Besides that the beach was clean and the girls had fun dipping their toes in the water and trying out their life jackets. Dogs do need to be leashed and you need to pick up after your furry friend. Overall a great place to bring Fido!
You can bring Fido inside!
Java Dog Coffee HouseJava Dog has great coffee, bagels, and bakery items. There was a bowl of fresh water outside on the side walk, and your dog is welcome to come inside and sit with you table side upstairs, in the main lobby, or right outside the store front which is inside! Great place to bring your furry friend on a hot, rainy, or cold day! I do wish they sold dog bakery items, but they did have dog bandannas available and we were welcome to raid the treat jar.
Great Shady Trails
P.J. Hoffmaster State ParkTrails are pretty well marked and are shady and hilly so you get a nice hike in without getting too hot. Dogs are not allowed on the beach, and must be on 6 foot leash. Beware some trail parts do get swampy or over run with water after heavy rains. There are several nice picnic areas and at least one out door restroom. Poo bags available. COVID: Visitor center has limited days. There are signs about masks and social distancing.
Get The Puppy Patty
Ray's Drive-InA hometown drive in with some good burgers and fries. Quench your thirst with a rootbeer or shake. They offer a “puppy patty” which is just a plain burger patty for your doggo to enjoy. You can then eat in your car or go to a local park to enjoy your food. COVID-19: Ray’s is following COVID protocols and offers call in orders and will deliver to your parked car, workers wear masks and gloves.
Great Place For A Stop And A Walk
Marv's Bark ParkCentral Park was very clean and had some great tables for a quick bite to eat, there are also bathroom facilities, tennis courts, playgrounds, and basketball courts. The park is very open with a bike path going thru it. You can walk your dog on the path or have your dog take a run in the dog park. The dog park does have a water station and a small dog run, along with the big open area. There are also dog water stations available at water fountains in the park and poo bag dispensers throughout. Overall made for a nice evening.
