Great beach, irresponsible dog owners

Hammonasset Beach State Park

I love Hammonasset and my dog does too. However, I almost never take her there anymore. Too many off leash dogs. My sister in law's dog was attacked by an off leash dog who was "friendly" and "never did that before". I used to bring my male bulldog who was intact due to our vet's recommendation. Because of that some males reacted aggressively to him. He was friendly but wouldn't back down if a dog started with him. To be safe I only introduced him to new dogs with both on a leash. Too many came running up to him with the owner way down the beach/path or just behind saying "it's ok, they're friendly". Maybe so but not every friendly dog is friendly to every dog they meet. Not worth the risk for me anymore.

Great place!

Hidden Acres Family Campground

Just spent the weekend here with my husband, two kids, and our English bulldog. Everyone had a great time and we're already planning to go back next year. Lots of campgrounds are "pet friendly" but many I looked at wouldn't let the dog off the campsite. Based on other reviews from pet owners we gave this place a try. This place truly is pet friendly. There are a few areas off limits to dogs, which is to be extremely expected (pool, office, dining area, playground). But, everywhere else they were permitted. We were able to take our girl for ice cream, walking anywhere around the campground, in and along the river. She even went tubing down the river. Our girl is like one of our kids and finding a place where she could be included was exactly what we were looking for. Aside from that, the campground is very clean and well maintained. They're also family oriented and you don't have loud people partying all hours of the night. Plenty of bathrooms and showers and plenty to keep everyone entertained, even my 16 ye old.
