My dog loves this place!

White Sands National Park

Bring a long leash and let your pup run and play on the cool white gypsum sand. Bring plenty of water and sun protection.

Reasonable and interesting for walking and training

Tingley Beach

This park is devoted primarily to fishing. It isn't an area where you or your dog can swim: part of the beach is a wildlife conservation area, and swimming isn't allowed in the fishing area (which makes sense: who wants Fido to step on a discarded hook?)

With that being said, Tingley Beach is a very good opportunity to walk your dog in a place with plenty of distractions. There will be children, waterfowl such as ducks and geese, and plenty of logs and other obstacles to climb on if you're interested in puppy parkour. The birds make a mess and people sometimes try to feed them, so the wildlife conservation area is a great place to practice impulse control and "leave it". There are garbage bins placed at regular intervals so it's always possible to find somewhere to toss a full poop bag.

There are restroom and snack facilities available for the humans, and a paved path that goes completely around the park. If you'd like to jog with your dog, this is a reasonably good place to do so without danger from cars. There is vehicle traffic close by, and a train that runs through the park area. So, if you're trying to acclimate a puppy to strange sounds, animals, and noises in a relatively controlled area, this is a good place to do it.

If you like to fish, this is a good place to do it alongside your pup. The ponds are stocked with catfish and rainbow trout depending on the season. A New Mexico fishing license is required.

This park is not a vacation site by itself. There is no onsite overnight camping or overnight parking in vehicles. There's enough to see and do for about an hour unless you plan to fish, in which case it makes sense to arrive very early in the morning.

Outstanding patio and miniature golf too!

Serious Texas Bar-B-Q

If you have a dog, just go around to the side where the patio is. You can place your order from the drive-through or at the counter. The atmosphere is ultra-casual.

This is a licensed barbecue joint with beer for adults and outdoor miniature golf for the kids. The shady trees create a much cooler atmosphere for dogs and humans to enjoy even on the hottest of afternoons. I enjoyed the sausage but my dog preferred the brisket. If Durango is your final destination and you're not going to try driving on the hairpin turns and deep drop-offs known as the 550, have a local brew. (If you're going anywhere near the 550, stay away from the beer and do your fellow drivers a favor.)

I myself selected a nonalcoholic cream soda beverage, which was very tasty. Conventional fountain drinks, iced tea, and lemonade are available too.

Tasty burgers and a pup friendly patio

Crash Burger

These burgers are thick, tasty, and juicy. In some ways the menu reminds me a little bit of the famous "In and Out" burgers in California or an old-fashioned drive-in. There are burgers that you can order with one, two, or (if your jaws can handle it) three patties. Specify whether you want cheese. There are fries, shakes, and drinks that include iced tea, lemonade, and soft drinks.

The patio is dog friendly and often busy but people don't stay long so it's usually possible to get a seat. We stopped here during our visit to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. With the drive-through approach you can get your meal to go while finishing the trip up to the park, or you can enjoy it on the patio. I particularly recommend their unsweetened iced tea and their lemonade.

Two important things I'd like to mention about the burgers is that they aren't over-seasoned and they're gigantic. Each one is easily a third of a pound of meat. So if you're like me and you like to break off a piece of patty for a doggie who knows just how to hold a good down position under the table, you can go for it without compromising your dining experience or your dog's health.
