Large park with many trails
Bear Mountain ReservationIt's a good size park, and plenty of trails to choose from. They all start and end in the parking lot. The longest loop is over 3 miles. Depending on the time of the day, you might have the park all for yourself. People would usually keep dogs on leash until they reach the forest, then you can let your dog free. Generally everyone is well behaved, I had no complaints about dog not being on leash in the forest.
Great hiking trail
Richter ParkThis is one of the best kept secrets in town, based on the number of people I've encountered :). You can park the car next to the tennis courts, and then go over the golf course to the start of the trail. You can pick between the main trail, that goes to the top of the hill and back, or by the lake, for a shorter trail. Both are secluded, and not so demanding hikes, with beautiful views. The dog really enjoyed it.
