West Virginia Penitentiary

Moundsville, WV, is home to the pet-friendly gothic-style West Virginia Penitentiary which operated as a prison from 1876 to 1995. There are no inmates nowadays, but you can still tour the buildings and grounds with your leashed pooch. The facilities are rumored to be haunted by previous inhabitants. You can find out more on a private paranormal ghost tour or ghost hunt. They also offer a historical tour during daylight hours. Visit Website

    Really Cool

We went on the day time walking tour and it was very cool! Our guide Garrett was very well-informed and answered all our questions in addition to giving us the interesting history and stories of the prison. We were able to bring our pup along and he was allowed inside and on the grounds. There were also two stops along the tour that took us outside to the prison yards, and pup was able to take potty breaks. Definitely recommend this place for a cool, educational, and slightly creepy experience with your pup!

    Great experience!

We were so happy to find a tour that was pet-friendly! Rugby enjoyed the visit almost as much as we did, and we even took photos of him with his prison number (front and side views) at the end.

    History Mystery Monday Tour

Not everyday do you get to go inside one of the most dangerous and haunted penitentiaries in the country.“astonishing history, a touch of art, cold hard facts, and an insight into the justice system.” Whether you like history or are interested in the paranormal this is a must visit. Pets are welcome to attend a guided day tour with you as long as they are friendly toward other animals and people, quiet, and don’t leave any “souvenirs” behind. There is no H/AC, so be sure to dress and plan accordingly to the current weather conditions. We were there the end of July and it was very warm, but not too hot. (We are from Texas though) 10/10 would do it again!
