    Fenced in!

This is the only fenced in off leash park in Monterey (there is another in seaside). It has its ups and downs.

There is a small dog section and big dog section. The big dog side has wood chips/ dirt, whereas the small dog section has dirt and weeds (fox tail weeds). Don't come in the summer on the small side if your pet has long hair, it's a pain In the butt to get out of their hair. I pull some of the weeds and throw them away when I'm there. But it would be nice if the weeds were gone.

As for socializing, it depends on the time of day. Lunch time seems to be busy. But I prefer going when no ones there.(everyone has their reasons: introverted, dog has behavioral issues and needs to stretch their legs because they don't have their own backyard to do so, health issues etc etc).

Sometimes dog bags are provided there. Allot of people take them home so they go quick.

Sometimes, especially during tourist session, there's no parking due to people using the parking spaces to explore Monterey (and there will be no one at the park). There are also a group of people who 'camp' there all the time in the parking lot and/or smoke. Other reviews said they are 'sketchy' people. They don't bother you at the park, but it sucks having to smell the smoke (just like anywhere else in the world where people smoke. So I leave because I can't be around the smell).

There is a water faucet there, but you'll need your own bowl for your pooch unless they know how to waterfall.

    Disappointing Dog Park

This is the only public, gated off leash dog park in the area (the next closest is in Seaside). While it's small, the real disappointment is that it's isolated/unpopular and the times I've gone there are some questionable people in cars parked right outside/along the dog park fence (many that hang out there but don't come in to the dog park). One time there was a group smoking there so you could smell it in the park. The park has a lot of potential!

    Small But Nice

This park is located next to the mausoleum, true, but it is well-shaded with lots of wood chips and leaves. My two large dogs were the only ones at the park and had run of the yard. It did the trick! They offer nice complimentary bags here, too, that you can actually open. So often I spend more time struggling with cheap bags that seem to be sealed at both ends. Not here! People come here during their lunch hours to sit in the shady parking lot and read a book. The beautiful waterfront is near this park. Leave your car and walk to the marina, fisherman's wharf, and the Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail. If you park closer you'll have to pay. All in all, it could be bigger, but isn't as bad as the prior reviewer might have you believe.

    Worst Dog Park Ever

To say that Monterrey and Carmel are dog friendly is one thing but this being the only off leash park in the area is a shame. The large dog space could not be more than 40' x 100' , sharing a wall with a mausoleum. On the other side is a field office with trailer and trucks for the local construction that was occurring while we were in town. There is nothing but thick bark, no grass and half of a hydrant. It is poorly marked and not right at 3rd Street and Pearl. Really embarrassing for a city that is known to be dog friendly.
