- LeslieSep 15, 2024Huge area to run!
Large space. There is a gated entrance, but once past that is a wide open unfenced off leash area.
A little difficult to find so use website address: 21850 US-160
There is a small dirt parking lot, follow the dirt path (going in direction of downtown) for about 100 yards and gate will be in your right.Shaded sitting/picnic area. Lots of dogs. You can get in a good walk as well!

Amazing space for dogs to run around, slash in the Animas, and stretch their legs after a long drive.

If your dog doesn’t have a good recall, I don’t recommend this park. There is a gate at the entrance, but the rest of the park is completely unfenced.
The park is mostly dirt and gets very muddy when it rains. On top of that, nobody picks up after their dog, so you’re constantly watching where you step. However, the park is quite spacious, which allows your dog to escape the crowd when they need a break.
The river can become pretty strong, although I doubt it could sweep away a dog. Regardless, I’d keep an eye on smaller pups near the water.
There was one dog relentlessly harassing mine, so I left before the situation escalated. Although the owner was nearby, they were more interested in their phone than their dog.
It’s a nice park, but the flaws are too big to ignore.

So much space to run. Be ready for your dog to jump in to the fast moving river.

On a road trip from MN to AZ this was by far the best park! It is huge! There are trails and the river to play in. My only complaint is the parking. That aside I would recommend this for everyone!
- JordanNov 4, 2021just moved here and love this dog park
My puppy Everest and I moved here back in September. This park has become part of our daily life. It's taken me a while to get used to letting him off the leash (only done so once), but it is great for socializing for both pup and myself!
- JadeAug 2, 2020Simply Awesome
Best dog park ever! We only got to see a small portion of it due to time limitations but the Animas River was awesome! Lots of friendly dogs and people. Would love to return if I ever make it back to Durango with the pups.

This park has everything. A river for the dogs to play in, acres and acres to run in, poop bags, amazing dogs, amazing people. By far the best park I’ve ever been to! I would give it six stars if I could. It’s tricky to find. So I recommend parking at the Doubletree hotel and then walk across the river… Just a parking tip!

A perfect place to end the work day. I'm in sales and travel a large territory. My Dixie travels with me often. We love finding a great spot like this for an off leash hike.

So awesome. I was nervous at the lack of fencing, but really did feel safe with the natural fences of the river and the hillside. If your dog is a swimmer, watch them carefully as the river seems to run swiftly (july 2016), but luckily mine aren't swimmers. Usually at dog parks I stand around while my dogs play, but here I get my walk on and the dogs play as we go! I've never been brave enough to off-leash hike with my dogs since I don't know who they'll encounter around the next bend, but here, I know it's all dog-friendly, so they had a splendid time. Came here every day of our week in Durango, and we'll miss it when we leave. No snake sightings, though signs posted said to watch out. Ok, I watched out, but what do I do if we see one?!
- MartaMore than a year agoPlease be careful
As one of the original board members of this dog park, I feel a bit proprietary. I would like to remind people that this is not a public service. The city could shut it down at any time if trouble arises (although I'm sure they don't want to). So please don't bring aggressive dogs or puppies who haven't been fully vaccinated. And please....CLEAN UP after your dogs! I hate to get preachy, but we fought so hard to get this park approved and we want it to keep going forever. Thank you!

This park is very beautiful, it is by the water and the mountains, a lot of green and a lot of freedom, people are very friendly :)

We use the dog park every day and meet people from around the country visiting Durango with their dogs. Everyone is astonished with the river access, trails, and sheer size of the dog park. if you walk to the far side of the park you get an incredible view of The kayakers and rafters dropping into Smelter Rapid. In the winter its common to see skiers and snowshoers doing laps with their dogs. Enjoy!
- AllisonMore than a year agoAWESOME!!
Awesome dog park! Our two Weims loved it and so did we did. Lots of room to hike and explore. We hiked "way up" the mountain one morning and turns out we were probably only 1/2 way up! Park isn't fenced but natural barriers keep dogs safe. Parking lot is hard to find. Go west on Hwy 160 from Hwy 550. As soon as you cross the river there is a diet parking lot on the south side of the road. The left side of the parking lot has a sign saying "Public Parking" and the right side of the parking lot has a long trailer on it where people are living. Follow the path leading out of the parking lot along Hwy 160 (about 50 yards) to the entrance.

OUTSTANDING. We're city people, have very limited off leash opportunity, and this park was a true 'find'. No regrets whatsoever that we added this side trip to our road travel itinerary. Our girl was happily exhausted following her long opportunity to run, sniff, chase, explore. And all the dogs and parents were friendly, welcoming. Just passed through, but loved Durango!!!
- MaryMore than a year agoBest Dog Park Ever
This dog park is great. Natural vegetation, and flat dirt areas along Animas river for the dog to play in. The only thing is there are posting warning of Rattlesnakes, but locals say they don't see rattlesnakes often, and only when you go on the upslope trials, away from the main play areas along river. It is not fenced, but the natural barriers keep dogs save. There is no sign for this park and the "parking lot" is a dirt patch of ground that is hard to find. I added a pix.
- LenMore than a year agoHuge dog park
This is one of the best dog parks in the U.S. That we have found traveling. It is a huge open area where dogs can roam free for miles. The boundaries are the Animas river on one side and mountains on the other. The parkings signs for this dog park are so small we missed it. We parked in a hotel parking lot next to the Animas river and started walking the river trail with our dog leashed. We had to ask people on the trail how to get to the dog park on the other side of the river, but all the locals knew where it was and how to get across the river and into the dog area. Your dog will definitely get lots of exercise here and you will enjoy watching people raft by on the Animas River.
