we love exloring the Potomac Heritage Trail from Turkey Run Park towards Georgetown - less crowded and less treacherous than the other direction. We usually start at the headquarters (Parking Lot B) during early Sunday mornings for quiet trails and beautiful views. Gorgeous open wood trail and stream crossings and waterfalls and narrow trails - has it all. You can go for several hours. We bring sandwiches and water and stop along a rock outcropping on the Potomac.

We've taken our dogs on this trail from the Algonkian Park and headed west and towards the border before and it's pretty nice. It retains the 'wilderness' aspect even though it's close to golf courses on that end. We've seen a lot of wildlife including a couple non venomous snakes (I've seen reports of Copperheads being in the more forested areas but we haven't seen any yet). There's a lot of shaded areas as well as sunny parts. We walked about 4 miles and it's really pretty. If your dog freaks out over squirrels, be aware there are a LOT of them. We don't run into a lot of people or dogs, if it's early enough. It's definitely worth the trip and we plan on walking quite a bit further out on it in the future.
