Nice Quick Walk
McLean Central ParkThis is a nice little area for a quick walk with paved paths through lightly wooded areas and a gazebo-grass-children’s playground, with picnic tables, so you could take kids to play while you take the dog to walk. There is a nice grassy area on a slight incline in front of the gazebo that you could play catch (50’ leash), although it tends to be filled with flying insects since it is low and close to the wood line (use lots of bug spray!). There are lots of other little trails in the woods behind the gazebo, near the library.
OK Location
Baron Cameron Dog Parkwe have been going here for years as it is the only large park in the area for large dogs. While it is quite large and has a water pump, small wading pools, and several benches, and many owners are very nice and responsible, there is no shade, it is gravel, it gets super hot, and there are several obnoxious owners who bring several dogs together who tend to be on the aggressive side and their owners don’t watch them as they should, ruining it for others. My dog was bit a year ago, requiring 9 staples. He didn’t react and merely walked away - I noticed it when I saw the saliva around the deep bite - so deep it wasn’t bleeding - and when I approached the dog’s owner, she hastily confirmed it was current on vaccines and ran out the gate with her dog. We take our dogs and usually stay if there are only a few dogs and on cool days and then leave when more arrive.
Great Place For Day Hike
Potomac Heritage Trailwe love exloring the Potomac Heritage Trail from Turkey Run Park towards Georgetown - less crowded and less treacherous than the other direction. We usually start at the headquarters (Parking Lot B) during early Sunday mornings for quiet trails and beautiful views. Gorgeous open wood trail and stream crossings and waterfalls and narrow trails - has it all. You can go for several hours. We bring sandwiches and water and stop along a rock outcropping on the Potomac.
