Sandy Hook/Gateway National Park Sandy Hook/Gateway National Park is pet-friendly between certain dates. Dogs are not permitted on ocean-side beaches at Sandy Hook Unit from March 15 through Labor Day due to piping plover season. Pets are permitted on bay-side beaches at Plum Island and Horseshoe Cove throughout the year, but must always be on a leash. 8th Ave Dog Beach 8th Ave Dog Beach is pet-friendly. Dogs are welcome to hang out in Asbury Park with other pups on this stretch of sand. During the summer, the beach gets pretty full so be prepared for many interactions with other canines. Dog owners are reminded to clean up any mess that is left behind and to keep an eye on their pups at all times while they play. Wolf Hill Dog Park - Oceanport NJ Wolf Hill is home to one of two Off-Leash Dog Areas operated by the Monmouth County Park System. This 4-acre area combines an area for dogs of all sizes as well as an area for smaller dogs weighing 35 lbs or less. Dog waste bags and garbage cans can be found in both dog areas, and there are portable toilets near the parking lot. Atlantic Beach Atlantic Beach is a seaside community on the south shore of Long Island. Located just 21 miles from Manhattan, the sandy beaches in the area are dog-friendly from October through March. Pet owners are reminded to keep their pooches on a leash under 6 feet while they are visiting and that dogs are prohibited from using the boardwalk year round. Although dog licenses are issued by the county, they are rarely checked and this rule isn't often enforced.
