Moraine Hills State Park Dogs are welcome at Moraine Hills State Park. This pet-friendly recreation area in McHenry, IL, is home to all sorts of different wildlife, including red fox, coyote, white-tailed deer, eastern cottontail, mink, opossum, raccoon, and lots of different birds. Located near the Fox River, McHenry Dam, and Lake Defiance; anglers swarm to the area in the hopes of hooking a fresh catch from the water. For those who prefer hiking to fishing, there are more than ten miles of trails, some surfaced with crushed limestone, that wind their way through the park. Alternatively, you can wander on the Fox River Trail, the Leatherleaf Bog Trail, and the 3.7-mile Lake Defiance Trail. The River Road trail is a paved pathway that is ideal for all levels of hikers.
