Fido can dress up in his Edgar Allan Pooch costume during his visit to Poe's Tavern on Sullivan’s Island, where Poe was stationed during his time in the army from 1827 to 1828. The Poet of Halloween is celebrated on the sign, on beer cans and in the form of look-alikes who frequent the popular restaurant on special occasions. Visitors can order Edgar’s Drunken Chilli or the Beef Raven burger and request a saltless patty for pups with a bowl of refreshing water on the house.

Afterwards, spend the night at the Historic Nurses Quarters. This Southern beach cottage built by the Army Corps nurses is reminiscent of homes that Poe would have seen on the island.

Rockafellas

The infamous Salem Witch Trials have left a mark on Salem, MA, known as Witch City, making it one of the spookiest pet-friendly towns in the country. Formerly the home of the city’s first church and featuring a network of tunnels underneath, Rockafellas is said to be haunted by the ghosts of ministers, smugglers and The Blue Lady. Grab your furry best friend’s broomstick and soak up the eerie atmosphere at this historic restaurant that serves American cuisine. While you try the New England Clam Chowder or a flatbread, your pooch can order a Canine Chicken Patty, Pup Cup or other items from the dog menu for his “Howl-o-ween” treat.

Continue your frightfest with a late-night walk to The Salem Inn, where four-legged guests receive bedding, bowls and a treat at check-in, as long as they don’t mind things that go bump in the night.

Witch's Hat Brewing Company

“Treat… this is definitely a treat!” Photo by Facebook.com/TheHatPub

Inspired by a bat who flew into the owner’s living room one evening, Witch’s Hat Brewing Company is a nod to the magic of the unknown and a mystical place to spend Halloween night with your macabre mutt. There’s nothing scary about the delicious food churned out by the scratch kitchen though. Try an order of fish and chips or a chimichurri bowl and wash it down with the perfect drink for the occasion, the Pumpkin Porter. Fido’s fears will disappear when he sees the canine cuisine menu with salmon, steak or chicken served with rice and peas, peanut butter apple dog treats and more.

Don’t miss a beat at the Rock N’ Roll Retreat. After dark, meet the whole pack around the fire pit to tell ghost stories, just ignore the glowing eyes in the darkness in the surrounding woodland.

Haunted Hamburger

When the owners of Haunted Hamburger started renovations on the once-abandoned building, the presence of a ghost was so strong they decided to let everybody know in the name. While it may sound like a frightening place to celebrate a goth dog’s favorite holiday, the stellar views from the pet-friendly porch, along with the succulent handhelds on the menu, are sure to keep the heebie-jeebies at bay. Meanwhile, your beloved and bone-chilling Black Shuck can fill up on ground chuck and wash it down with a bowl of refreshing iced water.

If you eat all your dinner, you might be left feeling like a zombie. Sleep it off at the nearby Clarkdale Lodge.

This unique restaurant boasts the “spookiest decor this side of Transylvania,” which includes Igor’s secret lab, a ghoul in the corner and more. Pups can sip from a bowl of water on the patio while owners sample Vampire Bites, The Reubenstein and more.

Bale Of Hay Saloon, Montana’s oldest watering hole, is full of both kinds of spirits. Begin your visit by ordering a Grog Dog to give yourself energy for the night ahead. Then sip on a nice vintage spirit to ease your fears of ghostly spirits lurking in the corners. If you’re feeling brave, join the nightly ghost tour that departs from outside the saloon at 10 p.m. and head to some of the most haunted buildings and spots around this former ghost town.

Cuddle up with your pup for the night in one of the pet-friendly cabins at nearby Nevada City Hotel.
