Wanderers' Rest Humane Association
WRHA founded in 1981 is the sole open admissions dog and cat shelter in Madison County which is dedicated to providing the highest quality care and compassion for the animals entrusted to us, striving to enhance adoptability, and re-homing adoptable animals at the highest rate possible, while educating and leading our community in creating a more humane society.
WRHA is a very unique shelter in CNY. We are the only animal shelter in Madison County but in addition we work outside of Madison County as we also have 3 off-site adoption centers in Onondaga County and hold contracts with 2 towns in Oneida County. As a result, we are serving animals and communities throughout CNY and as you can imagine the cost of doing so is high. However we believe in our mission and the importance of supporting as many as we can without putting boundaries on our service area. Our humane education program builds on the positive atmosphere of CNY. Our children are the building blocks, we are connecting with them in a fun and positive manner while educating them on responsible pet ownership and handling. In addition we partner with mental health and domestic violence programs, kindergarten through college level students, community based clubs and organizations, senior living communities and businesses throughout the CNY region. Our intention is to build stronger citizens and communities. Last year we provided over 300 presentations, held over 75 off-site adoption events, and taught 1,000 of individuals about responsible pet ownership. We continue sharing the importance of spay and neuter and the resources available. Last year we provided over 500 folks with assistance.
