A Hidden Gem for Highway Hounds

I can’t say enough good things about Dog Island!! Our last stop on a cross-country road trip with our Labrador happened to be in Grand Island. After checking into the hotel we took off to Dog Island so Miss Beast could get some exercise and play after long hours in the car. She loved it!! It was about 5 minutes from the Rodeway Inn, less than 10 minutes from the highway if you’re just stopping for the dog. Lots of parking. Clean area. There is a fenced in Small Dog area. The Large Dog area has a small sandy beach as you enter and goes right to the water. The area covers a large expanse with plenty of room for laps, ball throwing, and general frolicking. Our Labrador, who up until now has eschewed any opportunity to get wet or play in the water, decided she would join a game of chase in the water. She enjoyed running in the water, splashing around, and playing with two other Labs we encountered. There were poop bags available and plenty of space so Miss Beast could poop in private away from other dogs. Nearby waste receptacles and aforementioned bag stations, made the experience easy. Wish we had more time there.

Open space with dog path/run

We lucked out here. Reserved one of the last rooms over the phone while driving on Interstate 80. Check-in was straightforward. Room was basic, but clean. The true value came for our Labrador when we discovered a large grassy area right off our room, which offered plenty of space for play and access to a dog path complete with signage and poop bags. A great place for Miss Luna to run around and play with a few other dogs we encountered. Do note that they aren’t doing complimentary breakfast right now, and didn’t mention that upon check-in.

Our dog hated it, yours will too

Would give half a bone if possible. There was not a square inch of grass on the property. There was no adjacent area suitable for walking a dog or a quick potty before bed. Our dog hated it. If we had been traveling without the dog it would have been fine. Clean room. Fresh fruit, muffins, and granola bars offered for complimentary breakfast.

Great dog space!

The Rodeway Inn has a lovely area in the back for both dogs and people. Easy check-in and friendly staff. We had our dinner delivered and were able to leave the dog in our room while we ate in the dining area of the lobby. The room was clean and had plenty of space for us and the Labrador. Two reasons for knocking one bone off the rating:

1) The entire place had a stale smell from the smoking rooms. It wasn’t overwhelming, but it was noticeable.

2) No exterior access from the room. I prefer that when traveling with Miss Beast.

Bonus points for proximity to Dog Island, a fantastic off-leash free dog park 5 minutes down the road.
