I am a novelist, my husband is a retired engineer (now working as a golf course greenskeeper). We have 2 small Labrador Retrievers (5 year-old Chocolate neutered male, and 9 year-old Black spayed female … approximately 62 pounds each). Both dogs have AKC Good Canine Citizen certificates.

Classy Elegance

St Charles Inn

Luxurious hotel in a safe location. The friendly staff greeted our dogs at check-in. The hotel’s “gated” free parking lot was a huge plus, especially in New Orleans. Loved the front patio area with lots of tables and seating; making it the perfect place to eat breakfast and dine with the dogs (excellent restaurant adjacent to the hotel provided take-out food and adult beverages). The hotel served a full and filling breakfast, which included fresh fruit.

Our room was on the second floor, with elevator access. The room was large, extremely clean, with comfy beds and pillows, refrigerator/freezer, coffee machine with both coffee and tea k-cups. The decor was classic elegance. Very fast and reliable Internet, and great TV reception. The location was prefect. Trolly stop was outside the front entrance, and an easy walk to shopping and restaurants on Magazine Street. I felt very safe taking the dogs out to do “their business” in the predawn hours and late at night. There was an abundance of well-lit, grassy areas surrounding the hotel and lots of receptacles to dispose of poop bags. On our 2 week road trip with multiple hotel stays, the St Charles was by far our favorite dog friendly hotel.

Disappointed

Motel 6 Saint Joseph MO

First let me start with the positives: The room was very clean. There was a fenced in doggie area, that was in need of repair, yet surprisingly free from dog poops. There was also a grassy area and “doggie station” outside of the fenced area, but the doggie bag container was empty, and the waste basket was overflowing.

Now onto the not so good: the motel grounds felt unsafe, with LOTS of warning signs in regards to “lock your car” and “not responsible for." We parked outside our room, but I was not comfortable, and checked the car throughout the night. The bed was ok, but the pillows were lumpy and well-worn, yet the bedding appeared to be clean. Most disturbing, I walked in on the desk clerk engaged in a heated argument with a couple in the front office, with lots of curse words being thrown around. Although this Motel 6 was dog friendly, and an inexpensive overnight stay on our travels, I would not book here again.

Clean and Safe

Knights Inn Harrisonville

The motel was right off the highway, yet in a safe well-lit neighborhood. The desk clerk was friendly, and the check-in was quick and easy. The room was exceptionally clean. Nice refrigerator/freezer. Plus microwave. Very dog friendly. Loved that it did not have carpet. The bathroom was well-stocked and again very clean. The breakfast was self-serve, which was nice to grab something quick before heading off early in the morning. I took a “bone” off the review, because although the “doggy” area was convenient, it was like walking in a minefield (not many people had picked up after their dogs even though there was a large trash container next to the grassy area). Also, the pillows were not the best. But, overall I would recommend The Knights Inn in Harrisonville, MO as a great overnight stay.
