I'm a long-time cat caretaker and new dog caretaker.

My cat Evie found me on a wildlife reserve in Southwestern Louisiana. She is leash-trained and loves the great outdoors, but long hikes and long car rides are not for her so she tends to stay closer to home.

Cora is my first dog as an adult on my own. She's from Corpus Christi, TX, and a mutt mostly cattle dog, husky, and rat terrier. She was unsocialized her first two months, so she's very timid with strangers and new situations. I've been trying to get her out more in more chill, quiet, Cora-friendly settings. She loves hiking, beaches, and the outdoors in general, and loves other dogs.

Nice place, can be busy certain times of year

Barn Island Wildlife Management Area

This is a pretty nice place--a lot of the trails are wide gravel roads big enough to drive a truck down, but there are narrower, more rugged trails if you do a bit of walking. There's a pheasant stocking field off of Stewart Road (southeast parking lot) so that's the most active area in hunting season, and easy enough to avoid. Barn Island can be busy in the summer; there's a public boat launch at the end of the Palmer Neck Road entrance.

Excellent beers, great staff!

Shaidzon Beer Co.

My dog is very timid around new people and wouldn't be comfortable in big crowds, but I'm working on getting her out and around people. I brought her to Shaidzon because I know it's smaller and tends to be quieter than other nearby breweries like Whalers. The atmosphere was nice and chill, and a couple of members of the staff actually came over and let her warm up to them so that she would let them pet her. I think it was a really positive experience for her, and I got to have some great beers! I brought a rolled-up dog bed because the floors are hard.

Unfortunately this place seems to be closing down

Maggie's Krooked Cafe & Juice Bar

I visited on 7/30/23 and the woman there said they only had small things; they weren’t making meals anymore. The patio area didn’t have any tables. The woman was very kind and recommended other places in the area that were dog-friendly and open for breakfast. There were signs in the window saying that the place would be closing. Hopefully it’s not permanent! Sounds like it would have been a really great spot.

Great experience with our first trip to a dog-friendly restaurant

Last Chance Restaurant

I was camping with my dog and so relieved to find a place I could sit outside to eat with her! It was our first time at a restaurant together so I wasn’t sure what to expect but the staff were very accommodating and brought her a bowl of water. The (human) food and beer selection was great, and it was such a nice treat that they had dog food too!

Great food for me and the pup!

Yum Yum noodlebar

This place was great! Friendly, accommodating staff and great food selection. I was so excited about the dog menu! My dog was pretty worn out after hiking all day, and it started pouring rain but the umbrellas outside were large enough to keep us dry. She absolutely loved her chicken, rice, and veggies and enjoyed a nice long nap out of the rain.
