Super dog friendly

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa

Some hotels simply allow dogs. This wonderful hotel really welcomes them. When we arrived with Gus, he was given extra love by the concierge, they arranged for us to have a ground floor garden suite from which it was easy to take him out, and the staff arrived a few minutes later with a dog bed, bowls, extra toiletries “for when he needs a bath,” and a box of goodies. He was allowed on the pool deck (not in the pool, but he’s not a swimmer anyway), at the outdoor restaurant patio, and at the fire pits where we enjoyed happy hour. Truly a dog loving place!

Amazing oysters, and they love dogs

Nick's Cove

We stopped here after a great day at Point Reyes National Seashore. Dogs are allowed anywhere on the deck and dock, so we had a great spot over the water to enjoy sunset with tasty oysters. Gus made a lot of friends.

Paradise in SD

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

One of our favorite local spots to let the pup get some energy out and enjoy the sunset. We often see as many dogs as people here. There are trails (current renovations are attempting to make the park more easily accessible for those with disabilities) but there are also lots of cliffs to jump around on. We usually let our dog dictate the direction we head. The park backs up to the Point Loma Nazarene college campus, which is also friendly to dogs on leash. Hands down, best sunset in San Diego.

Limited dog access but beautiful cliff views

Cabrillo Tide Pools Coastal Trail

We live nearby and this is one of our go to spots for a quick hike along the water (the other is Sunset Cliffs park, which is larger and free but currently undergoing renovations). The tide pools are variable given the tides, of course, but the views are always amazing. We can easily run the 1 mile out and back trail to tire out our gentle giant and get some exercise ourselves. If you live nearby or are national park goers, it's worth it to get the America the Beautiful annual pass. Sadly, dogs aren't allowed at any other spot on Cabrillo, which is unfortunate because the bay trail would be great for them.

Protecting the desert

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Dogs aren't allowed on hiking trails anywhere in the state park (understandably, the desert is fragile and too many dogs would endanger native plants/animals) but they are allowed on wash/dirt roads and on the short native plant trails around the visitors' center. There is a 0.6 mile (1.2 mile) round trip sidewalk through the desert from the visitors' center to the campground, which was gorgeous in early spring, as everything was green and flowers were starting to bloom. Bring plenty of water.

Very dog friendly

La Casa Del Zorro

We stayed in a casita, which was great for us and the pup. There's a reasonable one time $50 cleaning fee for the reservation. Dogs are allowed just about anywhere outdoors on the property, including the pool decks. They're just not allowed in the restaurant or in the pools themselves. Staff were friendly and welcomed our dog during meals on the restaurant's outdoor terrace, which overlooks the manicured and beautiful smelling rose garden and wedding lawn.

Desert Oasis

Red Ocotillo

Relaxing patios (x2) for you and your dog under the shade of trees filled with singing birds. The staff were immediately receptive to our dog, came out to say hello, and brought him water. Brunch was great and we'll definitely go back.

Great for dogs

Sunset Trail

The Sunset trail loop is part of a larger network of interconnecting trails in Cleveland National Forest. It's great for doing a choose your own adventure kind of hike. The trails are very well marked and maintained. It was a bit muddy with melting from the recent snow (late February) but no problem with hiking boots. Our pup was able to experience snow for the first time and loved it.
