I searched online and saw that illegal sex acts , drugs, and racing is indeed an issue here according to the sheriff’s department. HOWEVER, I wound up here anyway after my friends who are locals took us here having never heard of such complaints. We went midday on a Saturday, found a pull-up and had a really nice time . I was surrounded by families playing, people barbecuing, and fishing. It was as more of a party, but nothing inappropriate.
NOTE many of the swimming areas are in mangroves and the clams are sharp so stay away from the mangrove edge and keep your dog away or you might end up with lil slices on your feet/paws. I wore shoes in the water.
There are a bunch of little pull-up spots you back your car right up to that is pretty cool. I kept my dog on a long line but others let theirs off. The busy road is too close behind for comfort. The tide rises so watch your car position as the day goes on if you pull right up to the shoreline! - JanMore than a year agoSexual Predator Haven
Be very careful. I bring my dog for aquatherapy here, as he does not get along with other dogs. The sexual predators are EVERYWHERE. I finally called the police today, as a man literally came into the water and started masturbating in front of me.. The police FINALLY showed up 45 minutes later. The cop asked me if I wanted to file a report. "I said on who? The sexual predator, or the police for showing up 45 minutes later?" They said they were too busy and taking care of more important things. This is after I told them there was a family with young children playing in the water about 50 ft away.

Used to go here 10 years ago. The water is filthy so your dog will get skin problems. There is lots of glass and lots of needles. It is a pickup spot for illicit sex so unless you park out in the open expect strangers to walk up to your car in the mangroves and solicit you for drugs or sex. It's not a dog park so Gandy Boulevard right behind you is a hazard if your dog doesn't listen or is not on the lease for getting hit. People race their cars up and down the sand along there even though it's pitted and bumpy in your dog can get hit there too. Take the time drive over the bridge and go to picnic island or just go down to Fort Desoto.

My wife and I are traveling from Newport Oregon with our little Cisco. Always looking for a place on the water to play. We go here 2- 3 times a week. Never crowded, never dirty, plenty room to run and play. Sure, have seen some small pieces of glass once in awhile, but we have seen that on any water or beach area. Never seen any dog poo anywhere.
- DeniseMore than a year agoNot the best, but not the worst either
Have taken out Lab to Gandy several times while in the area, and it was not dirty at all. He enjoyed himself and we like watching him play with all the other dogs. I did not see anyone NOT picking up after their dogs, nor did I see any glass. This is not a fancy spot-- just a causeway which has access to the water-- there are better alternatives in Pinellas County---Fort DeSoto, Honeymoon Island, and Belleair Dog Beach-- but if you are in this area, Gandy works in a pinch.

Last I knew u really couldn't go swimmin to well cus of all the broken glass an crap that's been thrown an tossed in there over all the years. I also had two dogs who I had for awhile b4 I took em to gandy beach an they had no problems of any kind... after visiting this beach they started having skin problems on their backside... so unless things have gottin better since then I wouldn't go to this beach
