Cades Cove Loop Road Located approximately 27 miles outside of Gatlinburg, near the town of Townsend, TN, beautiful Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains offers a variety of dog-friendly hiking trails and wildlife viewing opportunities. You can take Fido along for a scenic drive on Cades Cove Loop Road, an 11-mile stretch of roadway through the Smoky Mountain valley. Due to its location, you'll almost certainly see deer in Cades Cove. If you're lucky, you might even spot a bear, fox, or wild turkey. Dogs must remain in vehicles. See Details
Gatlinburg Trail The Gatlinburg Trail is one of only two pet-friendly trails in the Great Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg, TN. The trail is nearly two miles long one-way. It is quite flat and runs through a forested area. The trail offers nice views of the Little Pigeon River, and it runs over a bridge as well. Great Smoky Mountains National Park The Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers two trails that are dog friendly: Gatlinburg Trail (a 1.9 mile hike from the Sugarland Visitor Center to the outskirts of Gatlinburg, TN) and the Oconaluftee River Trail (a 1.5 mile hike from the Oconaluftee Visitor Center to the outskirts of Cherokee, NC). Please note that dogs are not permitted on any other trails within the park. Dogs are allowed in the campgrounds, picnic areas, and along roads, but must be kept on a leash at all times. The trail runs through the forest along side the Oconaluftee River and offers beautiful views of the river. The Oconaluftee River Trail is frequently used by joggers, walkers, and bicyclists. Joyce Kilmer Memorial Trail Joyce Kilmer Memorial Trail is a moderately easy, 2 mile hike in Nantahala National Forest that will take about 1 hour to complete with Fido. This figure eight shaped trail through old-growth forest of eastern hemlocks and tulip poplars is beautiful and offers stream crossings. Hunting in the surrounding game lands is in season September through March, except for Sundays, so be sure to wear bright orange. Please note that dogs are not required to be on a leash, except between April 1 and August 15; however, because of high visitation, rangers strongly advise hikers to keep dogs on a leash year-round. Tsali Recreation Area The recreation area has 4 trails, totaling over 36 miles which are used for mountain biking and horse back riding. The trails alternate between the two, so you can always take your dog on a trail where bikes are not. The trails are easy and well maintained. The area is beautiful and there are frequent creek crossings for your pet to get water. While you officially need to keep your pets on leash, we have never had a problem with off-leash.
