Fort Frederica National Monument Fort Frederica National Monument is pet-friendly. Once a thriving British town and fort founded in 1736 by General James Edward Oglethorpe, this pet-friendly structure was designed to defend the northern colonies against Spanish attack. Dogs must be leashed, well-behaved and cleaned up after. There are dog waste bag stations at the entrance to the historic area, and at the dinghy dock, plus water fountains for dogs and people on the breezeway porch of the visitor center. Unfortunately, Fido isn't allowed inside the historic buildings, the main attraction of the park, but they can join you on the nature trails around the area where you and your dog can get a real feel as to what life may have been like in the 18th century. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed inside any of the historic buildings in the area. The main attraction in the area is the Reynolds Mansion, which features marble sculptures, an ornately decorated Circus Room, murals by Athos Menaboni, a bowling lane, billiards, a library, and more. You'll even spot a 1920s lighthouse on the island that you can reach by one of the pet-friendly trails.
