Whitewater rafting is an exciting way for you and your adventurous dog to get out on the water and get your adrenaline pumping. It’s time to pull on Fido’s life jacket and hold on tight because this ride could get bumpy. Just make sure you don’t get caught up the creek without a Poodle!

Explore the winding Snake River on a rafting trip with Black Dog Raft Company. Featured in the latest edition of our book, Ruff Guide to the United States, Black Dog welcomes hardy hounds to join their owners on a 13-mile scenic float. Let your guide work the oars while you and your pup relax and take in the views of the snow-capped Teton Mountain Range and watch for bald eagles, osprey, otters, beavers, deer, elk, and moose. Trips depart three times daily between May and September, and rates start at $300 for two adults and a dog. Wrap up your exciting day with a walk around Jackson Square Park for photos in front of the famous antler arches before grabbing dinner at Café Genevieve, a Jackson Hole favorite of dogs and humans alike.

Let Colorado River Runs in Bond guide you and Fido on the perfect rafting trip down the beautiful Colorado River. The outfitter has created a special tour with dogs in mind, keeping everyone safe and ensuring fun for your four-legged friend. Your knowledgeable guide will lead you through light rapids, calm backwaters and deep canyons, stopping along the way for your pup to take a dip in cool swimming holes and dig his paws in sandy beaches. Life jackets for humans and canines are provided, and each raft can accommodate up to two dogs and eight people. Arrive early for your rafting trip and enjoy lunch in the outfitter’s designated picnic area. Fido can even say hello to the resident donkeys cared for by the Colorado River Runs team.

After a day on the rapids, take it easy at The Inn at Riverwalk in Edwards. Your pup will be welcomed with treats and his own comfy pet bed. Humans can relax in the outdoor hot tub or heated riverside pool. For some off-leash fun, take Fido to Edwards Freedom Park, located just steps down the recreation path that runs behind the hotel. Two dogs of any size are welcome for an additional fee of $25 per pet, per night.

Rolling Thunder River Company

Take on the twists and turns of the Nantahala River with Rolling Thunder River Company. This rafting hotspot is a popular pick for those who like their floats served up with rumbling rapids. Running the full length of the river, you’ll experience 8 miles of fun and 20 different named rapids along the way. The trip ends after Nantahala Falls, the only class 3 rapid on the river. Fido can get his land legs back at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, where he can join you for a walk on the nature trails and a feast at the outdoor tables overlooking the water at the center’s Big Wesser Riverside Pub. Rafting rentals start at $42 per person, and dogs float for free.

Truckee River Rafting

If your pooch is a chill seeker and not a thrill seeker, Truckee River Rafting offers self-guided rafting trips along a peaceful 5-mile stretch of the Truckee River. All levels of paddler will enjoy this 2-4 hour gentle meander down a flowing Lake Tahoe tributary. When you’re back on dry land, let your pooch off-leash at nearby Tahoe City Dog Park and grab some grub by the lake at Moe's Original BBQ - Tahoe City. Truckee River Rafting accepts dogs up to 50 lbs to ride in their rafts. Rates start at $60 per person, and dogs float for free.

Spend the night in The Tahoe A-Frame, a spectacular mid-century modern cabin located nearby.

Cody Wyoming Adventures

Begin your exploration of America’s Wild West on a private rafting trip with Cody Wyoming Adventures. The half-day adventures through Red Canyon are filled with exhilarating class 2 and 3 rapids, including Colters Falls, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and Little Big Drop. Tours include a lunch break on one of the river’s most scenic bends. Alternatively, you and your pooch can go on a shorter 7-mile meander through Shoshone Canyon. Private tours start at $299, and advance reservations are recommended. Dog owners are responsible for providing their pet's life jacket.

After all that action, unwind at The Cody. The hotel’s friendly staff will welcome both you and Fido with cookies upon arrival. Enjoy them by the fireplace, or retreat to the jetted tub in your guest room. Want s’more? You’ll find marshmallows, chocolate bars, and graham crackers outside by the fire pit, too! Up to two dogs of any size are welcome in the hotel’s ground floor rooms for no additional fee.

Windy's Canoes, Tubes, Kayaks & Rafts

Venture on the waterways of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways with Windy's Canoes, Tubes, Kayaks & Rafts, one of the few official concessioners allowed access to the protected area. Dogs are welcome on all of their vessels, including rafts with prior approval. Limited raft numbers are available, so call ahead to reserve a spot for you and your pooch. Raft rentals start at $120 for a day.

Fall asleep five minutes from Windy’s at Eminence Canoes, Cottages & Camp, where you can buy river equipment from the shop and camp with your pup.
