Fun Place!
Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & MuseumMy dogs love golf carts. They absolutely loved that they could ride around on a golf cart with us. This Sculpture Museum is one of the most unique dog friendly things we've found so far.
Mostly fenced in
Delaware State Park Swim BeachFor my senior dog, this place was great. Fenced in on 3 sides, with one side open to the lake, this dog beach is nice, unless you have an escape artist. The fence had lots of holes for little wiggle worms like my husky to get out from. We seen them, and didn't let her off leash.
The dog beach is next to the human beach, easy to find.
Took 2 dogs
African Safari Wildlife ParkMy husky had a blast. She absolutely love seeing all the animals, and barking at them. The dogs of course stayed in the back seat, and we kept the windows up unless we were actively feeding the animals.
It is a little pricey but it was fun.
Ash Cave
Ash CaveAsh Cave has a handicapped accessible trail to the Cave itself. There is a trail that involves stairs. That trail takes you to the top of the Cave for a better view. My husky had a fit, she didn't want to walk up the stairs, and then later on back down the stairs. She had to be carried. We thoroughly enjoyed the ancient Cave.
Good dog friendly place
WinetagousWe got a little cheese board from inside, but the Great thing about this place is they allowed foods from other places to be brought in. We were able to get pizza from nearby and bring it back here to eat. The dogs liked hanging out, people watching. Getting special little treats from the cheese plate.
Amazing food!
Latitude CafeWe originally thought we'd have to get takeout, but then we seen that Latitude Cafe had a big covered patio with a few tables set up. We asked inside and they said yes, the dogs could sit outside with us. The waitress kept bringing the dogs water, and everyone got to enjoy an amazing breakfast. Would absolutely recommend!
River Place Shops Were Fun
River Place ShopsMost places here allowed dogs. I do wish all stores would utilize the paw print sticker system. Stores that allow dogs should have a paw print sticker displayed, but not all of them do.
Regardless, the dogs had a lot of fun walking around here, getting snacks, people watching, and meeting all the other dogs. We were here during Dog Bowl 2021.
The dogs got to try beignets (2 small bites!) And they were in love.
My senior dog definitely tried to walk in the jerky shop. Which is an obvious no. He was just following his nose!
We ate crepes, pastys, beignets, and the dogs had all kinds of snacks. We were having a great day.
Great Cruise!
Bavarian Belle RiverboatDuring Dog Bowl, there was a Canine Cruise specifically for dogs and their owners. The dogs liked being on the Cruise, and we got to hear all the history of Frankenmuth. The dogs had fun dog watching all the other dogs moving around. It was a fun time and I'm glad we went on the canine specific cruise.
The only thing I would change, I know hearing the boat horn is part of the fun but maybe cut the time down or something if theu ever do a Canine specific cruise again. A lot of dogs were very scared and it took a few of them a while to calm down.
Must Stop Everytime!
Hello Cats & DogsThis store is so fun. The pet supplies and signs they have are hilarious. The little dog lederhosen and wedding dress gets me everytime.
Must stop in when you're in town.
Pastys are great!
Pasty HausMy dogs loved their dog friendly pasty and the chicken & ice. It was nice and cooling on a hot day. My picky husky doesn't always eat, but she chewed down on that pasty.
We stopped here, at the River Place shops, for a quick lunch and it did not disappoint.
Prost! Is the Whole Reason to go to Frankenmuth
Prost Wine Bar & CharcuterieProst is the best restaurant in Frankenmuth. There's nothing better then their Charcuterie boards and their kale dip. They also serve my favorite drink, the Italian Pear.
During spring/summer they have outdoor tables set up where a server will come serve you and your dogs.
My dogs absolutely loved getting some nibbles of Charcuterie and I'm sure they would recommend it too!
Boardwalk was nice
The BoardwalkDogs could walk out on to the deck and sit at any of the outdoor seating areas. My dogs enjoyed the light snack we had before heading out for more adventures.
Sat Outside
Reel BarThe dogs enjoyed the pet friendly seating area, as it was nice to get off our feet for a while. The hoomans enjoyed a nice cold drink, and the dogs of course got some water.
Beautiful State Park!
South Bass Island State Park CampgroundOne of the most beautiful State Parks. South Bass Island State Park does allow dogs on a leash at every campsite. The showers were big, the bathrooms were clean. We never had any problems. I would highly recommend staying here.
Claremar was great!
Claremar Twin Lakes Camping ResortMy dogs had a great time here. We got very lucky and had a site that didn't have anybody to the left or right so we had a little private lakefront site. The dogs enjoyed riding around on the golf cart. It was extra to rent a cart, but the dogs didn't mind the extra fee. The dogs also were able to swim next to the beach. The beach section that's roped off didn't allow dogs, but as long as your dog swam outside the roped off section, it was ok. There was still a large sandy area right there. The only thing wrong with this campground, was the showerhouse. And, they must know that because they are building brand new showerhouses near the beach. They even have pet friendly cabin and teepee rentals. Absolutely worth checking out.
My Boy Picks Out a Birthday Treat Every Year!
Three Dog Bakery ToledoEvery Year we pick out a birthday treat for my boy. He loves it!
Great Dog Park!
Middlegrounds Metropark Off-Leash AreaMy dogs love occassionally coming to this dog park to meet new friends. You never know who is gonna show up. Sometimes, when we get there there's no one there but if you wait 10-20 mins someone else always shows up. We love the off leash dog park!
Awesome Metropark!
Side Cut MetroparkThe entire Toledo Area Metroparks system is great. Sidecar was the first Metropark, and is still a beauty. My dogs love walking here. We always come down during walleye fishing time to see all the fishers in the water. My husky loves when we see deer at this park. This is a metropark, and a popular one, pets must be on a leash. But the trails are nice, easy to walk, and my boy can usually take a quick dip in the river if he needs to cool down.
Ottawa Park is beautiful
Ottawa ParkOttawa is a nice park, but it could be great with a few improvements. Ottawa Park is the largest city owned Park in Toledo (this doesn't include the Metroparks which are not city owned). And some of the trails are lovely. It has some good sports and activity facilities. But no real bathrooms. We dont walk here very often, because there's no bathrooms and some of the trails need fixed up. My dogs have been here on walks and they love walking through the woods and seeing all the deer when we can.
East Harbor is Beautiful
East Harbor State ParkWe camped at East Harbor a few years ago and can't wait to go back. The dogs enjoyed playing at the beach, and in the water. East Harbor is beautiful and one of my favorite Ohio state parks (tied with Malabar Farm!) The dogs loved the natural setting, walking the pet trail to beach, walking along the shore, and playing in the water.
Beautiful Natural Area in the middle of a city
Swan Creek Preserve MetroparkSwan Creek is a beautiful, Natural, wild area right in the middle of the city. You can forget your minutes away from the bustle of the city when you're standing in the center of the park. Some of the trails are quite deep, and take you away from the noise of the cars on the street. It's always a good laugh to cross the swinging bridge with the dogs. One of my dogs hates it. The other doesn't care. Don't worry, we've made them cross it only a few times. We carry them across if we have too. There's a few spots on the right trail where your dog can walk in the water if that helps them cool off. My dog loves it here. We always see a nice selection of other wild animals to keep the dogs entertained on their walks. There's some really good sniffs on the paved loop trail on the mile marker by the Overlook lol We always have to stop there and inspect.
Beautiful Tribute to Working Dogs
Michigan War Dog MemorialDid you know military dogs aren't allowed to be buried in National Cemeteries? I was outraged! The Michigan War Dog Memorial is the dog version of "Arlington Cemetery" but in Michigan. It used to be a pet cemetery, but is now for working dogs only. Some dogs are buried with full military honors. It's interesting to walk through here and read the plaques about where the different dogs served. My dogs walked through here to honor those dogs and we will forever remember the brave dogs who served.
The PIB Winery was Awesome
Put-in-Bay WineryPut-In-Bay winery has some of the best views and good wine. The dogs were able to sit outside in the shade while the humans enjoyed a drink. We were all able to rest and relax while we enjoyed our time on the island.
Dogs Ride Free!
Miller FerriesThank you Miller Ferry for allowing our dogs to come to the island with us. And, for not charging extra for dogs. The ride is smooth, and the dogs don't seem to mind crossing the Lake on the ferry.
Dogs Ride Free!
Kelleys Island FerryBeen to Kelleys Island a few times. The dogs ride FREE! And, my dogs don't seem to mind being on the ferry. Very smooth ride over.
Cabela's Was Fun
Cabela'sWhile shopping for camping gear, we took the dogs to Cabela's. My dog was eyeing some of those stuffed animals around. Particularly the life sized elephant. He also really really enjoyed the aquarium. So much that I wish we could go to a big aquarium with him, he loved watching the fish! We had fun, and would go back with the dogs again.
Oak Openings Is One of Our Favorite Parks!
Oak Openings Preserve MetroparkOak Openings has lots of trails. We loved walking around the sand dunes, then around the river, and through the dense pine forest. There's a few spots for my dog to dip in the rivers and creeks to cool down if need be. Oak Openings is a gem, and worth it to check out. Absolutely beautiful.
Went Here Once Loved It!
Agua Dulce Coffee & TeaI don't live in Monroe, MI but was camping near here and needed some real good coffee. Agua did not disappoint. The coffee was awesome, delicious and very good. The dogs enjoyed chilling and then we walked the Riverwalk afterwards so everyone could stretch their legs. It was beautiful.
Dog Friendly Patio!
Ye Olde Durty BirdThe dogs enjoyed the dog friendly patio, there was even other dogs here! The humans enjoyed the food, and the dogs even got a little bite to eat. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you're in Toledo and need a place to eat with your dog.
Handel's Is Great
Handel's Homemade Ice CreamThe dogs would probably rate the ice cream 100/10. They loved it here. There was an outside walk up window to order from.
Dogs Love Ice Cream
Cold Stone CreameryMy dogs love ice cream, anywhere we stop. This Cold Stone has outdoor tables which are perfect for sitting with the dogs and letting them have a few bites from a "Like It" size.
Timbits!
Tim HortonsMy dogs love timbits. Sometimes, the store will even give them a free timbit. So then they get two timbits. Their best day ever.
Great Spot!
Heineman WinerySometimes, you just have to get off the golf cart and have a drink.
I still don't know why dogs aren't allowed in the main seating behind the winery, but there is a nice big section off to the side away from the building where dogs are allowed. And you can sit out there and drink wine samples. Lots of trees around, it was a nice shady section.
Nice Dog Park!
Island PawsThe dog park is very nice.
The only reason I gave it 4 bones instead of 5, is because some of the fence isn't very sturdy. There are definitely spots where an escape artist dog could wiggle their way out. The dogs enjoyed their off leash time running around though, even though we were the only ones there.
Beautiful Walk with Dogs!
Windmill Island GardensMy dogs love going new places. They love meeting new people and new dogs, new smells, being out and about, and are generally happy dogs.
We so appreciate dog friendly places like Windmill Island Gardens. It was so neat to see the organ, the windmill, and the little village set up. We have to travel with our dogs, so we appreciate being able to go to these dog friendly places to see/learn something new.
The windmill was cool. If you want to go inside though, you'll have to bring someone with you to hold the dog while you go in and vice versa. It's ok. My husband and I are used to taking turns in places. Someone sits with the dogs, and then we switch places. It's still really cool to see the windmill even if you don't have a chance to go inside.
Would recommend the trip to Windmill Island Gardens with your dog.
Kelleys Island State Park
Kelleys Island State ParkThe Kelleys Island State Park is beautiful. That gorgeous Lake Erie Shoreline, and beautiful wooded area.
The only reason I rated 4 bones is dogs are not allowed on the swim beach. The only sandy beach on the island is at the State Park and they don't allow any pets on the beach. The rest of the island is full of pebble/rock beaches. There may technically be some places dog can swim around the Kelleys Island State Park, there are other access points besides the sand beach, but we went down to the beach by the marina and swam there.
Beach is Now Dog Friendly!
Saugatuck Dunes State ParkThe Saugatuck Dunes State Park Beach and Swim Area IS Dog Friendly now. This seems to have changed sometime in the past 2 years. My dogs really enjoyed their day on the beach and in Lake Michigan.
From the MI State Parks Website for Saugatuck Dunes State Park:
Pet-Friendly Area
Pets are allowed along the entire length of the Lake Michigan shoreline. Pets must always be on a six-foot leash and under an owner’s immediate control. All pet waste must be properly disposed of in trash receptacles.
Getting to the beach was a much longer hike than I had anticipated. Admittedly, I thought .6 miles would be a super easy 10 min walk. It was not. I wouldn't recommend for people with disabilities. The hike was uphill, walking up sand, no traction. And to get off the beach you had to walk up a sand dune to the trail.
But the views of Lake Michigan at the top of that Sand Dune were worth it. Also, being on a beach the dogs could join us at was awesome too. The dogs enjoyed the cold Lake Michigan waters on a hot day.
I would highly recommend. Bring a snack and water as the beach has no food facilities.
Also, warning: there's one small porta potty shack to change in. One. And, if you have to go while on the beach you have to climb up the sand dune to get to the porta potty. It's not as bad as I make it sound but just keep that on mind. If you can get to the park already in your beach gear, I would recommend that.
Beautiful Lighthouse!
Marblehead Lighthouse State ParkThe Marblehead Lighthouse is beautiful. We had a great time visiting and enjoying the views. My dogs were very interested in the smells here and enjoyed climbing around on the rocks.
There was even a food truck here, so we got to get lunch too. The dogs enjoyed their small taste of food that they got. Can't ask for a better view while eating lunch. 😋 There were quite a few picnic tables, so we were able to find a socially distanced spot to sit down at.
Awesome place!
Red Fern Inn at Rocky Point WineryLoved sitting around a fire, drinking wine, and warming up our feet while the dogs sat next to us. The dogs enjoy people watching. It was a nice relaxing time to hang out with the dogs.
The Chicago Riverwalk is Amazing!
Chicago RiverwalkWe had breakfast with the dogs down at the River Walk, and they were able to sit at the outdoor table and enjoy the views too. We then walked around, got coffee, got a drink, and had a great time seeing everything with the dogs.
The Riverwalk is one of my favorite newer things about Chicago. And I cant wait to go back!
Fun Day at Nelis' Dutch Village
Nelis' Dutch VillageNelis' Dutch Village was such a fun day.
The dogs enjoyed walking around, getting pets, free sniffs, and being confused by a Llama 😂. Dogs are not allowed in the barn itself but they got to see some of the farm animals that were behind the barn, from a respectable distance. We also got some lunch, and yes my spoiled dogs got some food too. 😋
There is a fee to get in, but the dogs were free. The admission price was worth it. We got to learn a lot about Dutch history and culture. Dogs were allowed in all the buildings (except the barn), so we were able to see the wooden shoe carving machines up close and check out the witch weigh station.
The food there was pretty good. I wouldn't say it was amazing but the Dutch Cafe and Pub were good enough. The homemade sauces were amazing though. Make sure to get the sauce trio when you go, makes the food even better.
There's also a Cheese tasting shop, a fudge shop, a sweets shop, an ice cream place, and a large gift shop. We stopped for ice cream before we left and the flavors were really good.
If you want something different to check out, and are in the Holland, MI area with your dog, I would absolutely recommend Nelis' Dutch Village as a place to go at least once.
Amazing Monument!
Perry's Victory & International Peace MemorialThe Perry's Victory Memorial is the World's largest Greek Doric Column.
The dogs enjoyed walking around it. They get pets wherever they go, always act like they never get attention.
The dogs were allowed outside and inside on the ground floor of the Perry's Monument. We got to see the plaque where the soldiers are buried, and read all the inscriptions in the doorways.
The monument is awe inspiring.
Great off-leash dog beach
Harrison Lake State ParkThe Harrison Lake State Park Dog beach is located near the campground. There's a sign pointing down to the dog beach from the road. At the "Dog Swim Area" there's a sign posted that dogs are allowed to be off leash in the sand and water only. My dogs really enjoyed swimming at the dog beach and playing in the water. Harrison Lake is a beautiful State Park and I would highly recommend. The water felt great and it was really worked out for my dogs to have somewhere to cool off.
The Boathouse Had Awesome Food!
The Boathouse Bar and GrillWe ate at the boathouse on a Friday night, the weekend before Memorial Day.
The Boathouse had great food, and they even brought out a big bowl of water for my dogs. My boy enjoyed drinking out of the large bowl. The waitress was attentive and even checked the dogs water a few times to make sure they still had some.
Joe's Bar is Worth a Stop!
Joe's Bar and RestaurantJoe's Bar had excellent food, and a large dog friendly seating area. Joe's Bar even sent out some freebies for the dogs, like a chunk of their famous bologna.
Delicious Food and Attentive Staff
Hooligans Irish PubOur waitress brought out a big bowl of water for the dogs. We didn't know what to expect food wise, but this place had some of the best food on the island. Highly recommend a stop here!
The Keys Had Good Food!
The KeysThe dogs loved eating at the Keys. They had some chicken tenders.
The views of Lake Erie while eating were awesome. If you're on South Bass Island, I highly recommend stopping here for lunch or dinner.
Great Spot!
Kelleys Island BreweryThe beautiful views alone make the brewery well worth the stop. The food was delicious. The chef even brought out a big bowl of eggs and chicken for the Dogs!
Highly recommend, will stop here again next time I'm on the island.
West Bay Is Fantastic
West Bay Bar & RestaurantWest Bay had very good food. Allowed all dogs to sit with their humans on a nice grassy area. There were water jugs pre-filled and set at the end of every table, which was nice to fill the dogs water up. The view over Lake Erie is amazing. Watching the sun set was breathtaking. There's even a little spot across the street to access Lake Erie, my dogs were able to take a short dip in the water to cool down before sitting down for dinner. West Bay had good drinks, great food, amazing views, and was a nice spot for the dogs to sit and relax too. My husky loves people watching and we were able to find a shady spot for my senior dog to lay down in too. I would absolutely recommend West Bay if you're on Kelleys Island. Dinner while watching the sunset was a really cool experience.
KI Cantina and Kelleys Island Wine Co.
KI cantinaThe Kelleys Island Cantina and Wine Company are two buildings right next to each other. There's plenty of outdoor seating at both, and both places allow dogs at all outdoor spots. The KI Cantina has amazing margaritas, and the KI Wine Company has Charcuterie boards that are perfect for sharing with four-legged companions. The KI Cantina and Kelleys Island Wine Company are great spots to grab a meal or a drink with your dog/s.
RV camped at Sterling State Park
Sterling State ParkThis is the only Michigan State Park on Lake Erie. The campground was roomy, but didn't have any shade. The trails are beautiful. Walking along the Lake Erie Shoreline is gorgeous. However, all that beach and they couldn't even make one section of it dog friendly? Dogs are not allowed to set foot on the sandy beach. Without having a spot for dogs to swim, and most of the campground being open in the sun, I really don't think we'll be back.
Beautiful But...
Holland State ParkThe Holland State Park is beautiful. The Michigan shoreline is gorgeous. The sandy beach looked nice, but since I had my dogs with me we couldn't set foot on to the sand.
All that beach, and they didn't even designate one tiny section for dogs. I'll never understand why not.
I'm sure the trails are beautiful but we moved on to find a dog friendly beach. I have a senior dog who overheats in the sun, so finding a place to swim and cool off is a necessity for us.
Drury Inn During Dog Bowl
Drury Inn & Suites FrankenmuthWe stayed at Drury Inn May 28-20 2021, over Memorial Day weekend during Dog Bowl. The dogs loved their stay. The hotel room was roomy, and even though there were a lot of dogs the hotel was quiet. My dogs do weigh over 80 pounds combined, and I was very upfront about that when booking. The front desk assured me no one was gonna break out a scale, but did say dogs that were obviously too large could be turned away. My dogs are 38 and 59 pounds. We were not turned away and enjoyed our weekend!
Spruce Hill was pawfect!
Spruce Hill Inn and CottagesWe stayed here over Labor Day Weekend September 4-6, 2021. The price was great, and our cottage was roomy. The dogs had a relaxing stay, we didn't really hear the neighbors too much despite sharing a wall. The hoomans enjoyed the jacuzzi too. A nice place, would recommend!
