Terrible service

SureStay Hotel by Best Western San Diego Pacific Beach

This is the first one bone rating I have ever given a hotel. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone. There are many hotels in San Diego, and I recommend you keep looking.

CONS:
1) Unfriendly staff. After an 11 hour drive, my dog and I arrived at the hotel, and the staff at check-in was unfriendly: no smile, no chit chat, no welcome. Also, importantly, the staff specifically mentioned that the rooms "are cleaned every other day unless requested" (more on that in #3).

2) The bathroom was not that clean when I arrived. The toilet bowl was fine, but the outside of the toilet, the tub, the floor, and the sink area were not that clean, which was disappointing.

3) I stayed four nights, and my room was never cleaned/serviced. Each day, I would be gone for 5-8 hour stints at a time from late morning through late afternoon enjoying SD, and I would also step out every late afternoon/evening for dinner, so I felt that there was ample opportunity to clean the room without ever disrupting me. Also, no staff ever knocked on my door to ask to come inside to clean when I was there. Because my room was not serviced after the second night, like the staff mentioned it would be at check-in, I called the front desk on the third morning to specifically request that my room be serviced, and after that call, I was then gone for about 8 hours and expected to come back to a clean room. However, my room was not cleaned, which frankly, sucked.

4) The room was tiny.

5) The plumbing was very loud. Closing the bathroom door mitigated the noise, so definitely close the door to the bathroom or your neighbors will wake you.

PROS:
1) Good location, a short distance from everything.

Overall, I would never stay at this hotel again, and would not recommend this hotel to anyone. In my experience, every Best Western hotel has usually been pretty good, decent 3+ bones. However, this Best Western was the worst experience.

Unfriendly staff

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Corning an IHG Hotel

I do not recommend staying at this Holiday Inn based how unfriendly the staff was, because not all the amenities worked, and because I found a better place to stay for less. After a 12 hour drive with only my dog, I arrived at this Holiday Inn Express and asked for a room. The staff at the front desk were not friendly whatsoever. After I got my key, I lugged all my luggage and pet up to my room, and found that my key card was not programmed correctly (the green light never blinked in response to swiping the key card), which meant I had to lug all my belongings back downstairs to have the staff reprogram the key.

The staff tried to explain to me that I was opening the door incorrectly (that I had to pull the handle up) when the light blinked green, but I let her know that the light never blinked green. After she reprogrammed the key card, I went back upstairs and the first time I swiped the card, the light blinked green. Early the next morning, the same staff was working the desk, and again, they were not friendly whatsoever. The quality of the service provided makes a big impression, and the impression was that I didn't deserve friendly service.

Also importantly, the internet did not work at any point, and I noticed that the side entrance to the hotel seemed broken open and was not locked, which meant that anyone could enter the hotel from the side door. The hotel room was old but the room was clean, and everything expect the internet worked fine. It was the first time that I drove the I-5 stretch between Yreka and Sacramento, and I realize now that you may not expect to find 5 star hotels and service in that area. However, I did a round trip, and on the way back, I stayed at a Best Western plus hotel a few miles north in Anderson. The other hotel was cheaper, had friendly staff that smiled and talked, and it had internet that worked. In other words, there are other hotels nearby where you will have a better experience and get a much better value for your money.

Friendly staff, spacious and clean rooms

Best Western Anderson Inn

I am giving this hotel 4 bones because I feel this hotel is a relatively GREAT value for your money in relationship to other places along the stretch of I-5 from Yreka to Sacramento, which is important to know for folks that are driving through this area for the first time.

PROS:
1) The staff were super friendly, both at check -in and -out (I only stayed one night). It made me feel like I mattered. After an 11 hour drive, I was really tired, and found it is important to me to be greeted with a friendly face and a smile (I did a round trip and I was not greeted like this at another nearby hotel I reviewed along this I-5 stretch).

2) The room was super spacious and very clean. After a long drive, it was important and great to feel like I could walk into a room and relax in a clean, spacious room!

3) Great value for your money.

CONS (minor):
1) The plumbing was loud. Definitely make sure the bathroom doors are closed so you won't hear the plumbing from your neighbors.

2) The internet did not work. I didn't care much because I had mobile hotspot from my phone, I fell asleep pretty quickly after a long drive, and I woke early to start driving again.

Despite these 2 minor issues, I would stay at this Best Western again and recommend others also stay there.
