Red Roof Inn

Red Roof Inn Spartanburg I-85

This hotel has supposedly been under renovation for more than two years, but we could not tell it from our experience. We had three adults and one dog staying in a fairly crowded room with two double beds. One bed had its left side against a wall and the other was solidly against the under-window heating/cooling unit, leaving an aisle between them that was about 2 feet wide. The result was that one person in a bed might have to climb in and out from the bottom of the bed (fortunately, there was no footboard to interfere with this). And only one side of the bed could be sat on.

They had a posted sign, which we did not see until later, stating that, if we did not report any problems within 20 minutes of checking in, that there would be no discounts or room changes. Our room was small and in somewhat poor condition with peeling paint, cracks and rust. There were cigarette holes in the coverlets-and a pillow case.

Our daughter had trouble sleeping because the two sides of the mattress had uneven and warped springs. There were no blankets in the room; and the coverlets were as thin as a sheet. Fortunately, we had a couple of blankets with us (planned for use later in our trip) so we did not find out if the hotel could have supplied some.

There was no room for a pet crate for a thirty five pound dog. We found out the next morning (Thanksgiving) that our shower did not function (who would have thought to check that out when first checking in). There were no maintenance staff working that day. We were staying 4 nights and it was only working for half the time we were there (so showers were not possible for 2 evenings & 2 mornings).

When I sat in the desk chair, it tipped uncomfortably backward, and I quickly stopped leaning back without finding out if it would fall backward (although it felt like it might). This was the only chair, so there were no other places to sit other than on the foot of the beds or only one side of each bed. (This likely contributed to the unevenness of spring support on that bed). A securing nut for the shade on a lamp was missing, causing the lampshade to contact the bulbs (resulting in a fire hazard), so we did not use that lamp. The chair and lampshade problems were also reported - the shade was removed (presumably until they could obtain a replacement nut), but we did not retest the chair to see if anything was done about it.

The mini-refrigerator had solid ice coating the freezer section and making the refrigerator very cold. We had to be very careful where one stored vulnerable food. The pet policy was very restrictive. Unlike some hotels, a pet could not be left alone in a pet crate, so this restriction (and lack of space for a pet crate) greatly limited options about going out to eat. There were 11 items in the hotel’s pet policy (we cannot attach a picture of it) and a signature was required agreeing to abide by it. We wished we had gotten some kind of discount for the two nights without the shower. Even with a working shower, this hotel was not worth the $73.86 per night we paid.
