Pretty clean, and convenient.

Good Place

Comfort Inn Blacksburg University Area

Probably the best value priced motel I stayed in on my recent 20-day road trip. Most value places have at least a bit of sketchy-ness. This Comfort Inn was a well-designed, well-constructed building, clean and neat. The serve an actual real breakfast with eggs and such. Just one thing, it's about 15 minutes from 81, it is not the most convenient to the highway. It wasn't busy, but that might change during certain times of the year related to their proximity to Virginia Tech.

Clean, a little sketchy

Red Roof Inn Martinsburg

This place was clean, but it is a little sketchy, tired and worn as you might expect with just about all the value motels. Access to rooms is via the interior hallway, but there are unique outside access doors for the first floor rooms. Be careful not to lock yourself out of your room if accessing the parking lot through the room's exterior door (ask me how I know), which can be convenient for moving stuff in or out. Also, the key only works on the interior door, so you can't come and go via the exterior door. I think I remember a small coffee maker in the room. No breakfast. 3.5 bones.

Poorly designed property

Red Roof Inn Darien - I-95/ North Brunswick

This place is new and modern, but poorly designed and a little light on amenities. There was good coffee in the lobby; no breakfast and no coffee maker in the room. The room was clean. There is no entrance to the parking lot, you have to go through the lot for the motel next door. The only signage for entrance is a Do Not Enter sign on the most obvious access point - making it confusing and dangerous (you need to enter on the far side of the adjacent motel parking lot and come through that lot into the Red Roof lot.)

The lines on Red Roof lot indicate the way to the lobby/office entrance along the side of the motel about halfway down the building. There are parking space lines painted through the travel lane, also obviously wrong and confusing. Almost all the parking is at one end of the building and if your room is at the other end of the building, as was mine, there is a key access door around the back, but no walkway or signage, and construction debris/junk in the back by the door.

I did use a No Parking area at the end of the drive, temporarily, to stage stuff. Inside, things were a bit awkward too, one switch for lights in the sink area and the toilet/shower area that also turns on an exhaust fan powered by a 747 jet turbine. The incomprehensibly poor design of this property is also noticeable in the signage and road markings all along this commercial strip in Darien suggesting the absence of any town design/building oversight. 3.5 bones (extra half a bone for newness). Check-in staff were fine.

Clean but a little tired

Days Inn by Wyndham Biscoe

The room was clean and pretty modern. The building is definitely a little dated and worn. As with just about any value motel, there are aspects of sketchiness, but not overwhelmingly so. There was a great dog walk area around the back and the side, but it was hard to access because there were closely spaced bushes around the entire perimeter. There was a coffee maker in the room and good coffee in the lobby, but no breakfast. Good access from car via direct doors for ground level rooms.
