Tips for a Fun Summer Road Trip

Posted by Erin Ballinger

Whether you’re headed to the beach, lake, or a state park, a summer road trip with your dog is a great way to make memories that will last a lifetime. When you travel by car, the journey can be as much fun as the destination. Before you start making those sweet on-the-road memories, check out these essential tips to ensure an enjoyable vacation for you and your canine best friend.

1. Make Sure Your Dog Is Healthy

Take your pet for a checkup before your trip.

Before going on any trip, your pooch should be up to date on all vaccinations and on preventative medication for fleas, ticks, and heartworm. If your pet is behind on her vaccinations or you have concerns regarding her health, visit your vet at least 30 days prior to travel. If your dog hasn’t been microchipped to help with identification in case you get separated, this is also a good time to do that. Your mobile phone number should be printed on your dog’s collar tags for the same reason.

Some hotels may ask for an updated copy of your pet's veterinary records, so request a copy and have this information handy during your trip. Or, skip the paperwork and create your pet profile on the BringFido app for iPhone or Android. You can update your vet records on the app and have everything you need in one place when you're on the road.

2. Book Pet-Friendly Accommodations

There's an app for that!

Unless you’re planning to stay with family or friends, you’ll need to book a pet-friendly hotel or vacation rental. But don’t wait until the last minute to book your stay. Dog-friendly rooms are limited at many pet-friendly hotels, so booking your stay in advance will give you access to the best selection. Use BringFido’s website or mobile apps to find the best rates on hotels and vacation rentals along your route. Review pet policies, including any applicable pet fees and breed or size restrictions, to ensure that you’ll have no surprises at check-in.

3. Get Travel Insurance

When traveling with a pet, it’s best to expect the unexpected. Changes in the weather, illness, accidents and car trouble are just a few of the circumstances that may throw your plans off course. BringFido has partnered with travel insurance provider, battleface, to bring you Pet Travel Insurance which provides coverage for a variety of disruptions, including unexpected veterinary expenses if your pet gets sick or injured during your trip. In addition to Pet Travel Insurance, BringFido also offers Pet Damage Protection, which covers hotel or vacation rental damage caused by pet (or human) accidents. Both offerings can be added to your hotel or rental reservation at the time of booking on BringFido’s website or mobile apps.

4. Pack Smart

Don't forget the doggy essentials!

When traveling by car, it’s a good idea to have a pet emergency kit handy, like this 60-piece certified pet-friendly kit with an instruction booklet. Other packing essentials for pups include a water dispenser, collapsible dishes, plenty of food and water, a collar with ID tags, two leashes, pet wipes, blankets or a bed, waste bags, and a crate or kennel. Don’t forget a doggy life jacket if you plan on taking Fido near the water. Of course, you’ll want to make sure your dog is happy during the ride, too. Bring a new chew toy and yummy treats to keep him occupied.

5. Get Fido Dog-Tired Before the Trip

Your pet should be ready to relax in the car.

Let your furry friend burn off some steam the day before you leave by taking him to a dog park or doggy daycare. On the morning of your trip, start the day with a long walk or game of fetch. Expelling lots of energy early in the day will allow your pup to relax comfortably on the journey. When it comes to mealtimes, give your pet a light meal a couple of hours before you depart and then feed him according to his normal routine. Prevent dehydration by providing water to your dog many times throughout the day.

6. Designate a Safe Place for Fido in Your Car

Keep your dog safe while traveling in the car.

Traveling with a pet is much easier and safer when he has a comfy place to ride in the car. The most important tip when preparing for a road trip is to ensure that your pet is restrained. It's safest for dogs to be contained in a carrier, secured with a harness or seat belt, or laying down in the back seat. Try to make their area comfortable with a bed, blankets, and familiar toys. Some cars even have handy dog-friendly features like washable, fold-down cargo areas or cargo barriers that keep your canine safe in the back of the vehicle.

7. Stop for Breaks

Stop to let Fido stretch his legs every few hours.

Be sure you allow extra travel time on road trips for bathroom breaks for your dog. It's generally recommended to stop every three hours, but you know your dog's routine best and may need to stop more or less frequently. Also, if Fido gets restless in the car, a long walk or a bit of playtime in the open can do wonders to keep him at ease. Use BringFido to find dog parks and walking trails along your route.

8. Plan Dog-Friendly Activities

Get out and spend your vacay with your pup.

Since you’re bringing your furry friend with you, we're going to guess that you want to spend some quality time together during your road trip! Whether it’s morning walks on a dog-friendly beach, trips to a local dog park for off-leash romps, or catching the sunset together in a kayak, you’ll have more fun with your dog in tow. Use the BringFido app to find pet-friendly attractions on your trip. You might just discover your new favorite dog-friendly activity! When it’s time to eat and drink, stop in at dog-friendly breweries and wineries, or dine out with your canine companion at a dog-friendly restaurant. Just make sure to follow the posted rules and be courteous of others when you have your dog with you.
