Fido's Road Trip Trail Mix

Although stovetop popcorn calls for oil and salt, you should omit them in order to keep this recipe dog-friendly.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup stovetop popcorn kernels
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen peas
  • 1 cup carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries, thawed and rinsed

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 225º F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

  2. Spread the peas and carrots in a single layer on one baking sheet, and blueberries on the second. It is not necessary to thaw the peas before dehydrating, but thaw and rinse blueberries or they will get messy!

  3. Bake for 2 to 4 hours until crisp.

  4. Place the popcorn kernels in a single layer on the bottom of a large pot with a tight-fitting lid.

  5. Heat on the stovetop over medium-high, and listen as the kernels pop. When the popping slows to an interval of every second or two, turn the stove off and remove the pot from heat to cool.

  6. Allow all ingredients to cool to room temperature before mixing up Fido’s Road Trip Trail Mix. Portion into serving sizes appropriate for your pooch (this recipe typically results in 4 - 6 servings).

Ingredients

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ⅓ cup low sodium peanut butter
  • 1 tbs chia seeds
  • ¼ cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • ½ cup apple, diced

Instructions

  1. Soak chia seeds in 2 tablespoons of cold water for 10 minutes. The chia seeds should absorb most or all of the water.

  2. Mix oats and peanut butter until well combined. Stir in rehydrated chia seeds, shredded coconut and diced apple.

  3. Put the mixture in an 8 x 8 baking pan (or similar size dish) lined with parchment paper. Cover with plastic wrap and press down firmly. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour.

  4. Cut and wrap individually in plastic wrap or parchment paper. (If you refrigerate for longer, the bars will need to rest at room temperature to be soft enough to cut).

  • Coconut oil
  • 1-2 medium to large sweet potatoes
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 225º F. Grease a wire rack with coconut oil and set it on a rimmed baking sheet.

  2. Scrub sweet potato and cut in half, lengthwise. Then slice into thin pieces. Toss in a bowl with the ground turmeric until well-coated.

  3. Lay strips on the wire rack and cook in the preheated oven for 3 to 5 hours, depending on how thick you sliced the sweet potatoes and your pup’s preferred amount of crispiness.

  4. Once they have cooled, these dehydrated sweet potato jerky treats are ready to be enjoyed. Wrap pre-portioned sizes individually for easy treats on the road.

Ginger Mint Tea for a Carsick Canine

Unfortunately, our furry friends can sometimes get a bit queasy in the car, just like us. This dog-friendly tea includes two natural ingredients proven to help relieve mild nausea in dogs and humans: mint and ginger. To soothe an upset pup's stomach on the road, serve just small amounts at a time.

Ingredients

  • Fresh ginger
  • 3-5 peppermint leaves

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice about 6 quarter-inch thick slices of ginger.

  2. Put ginger slices and 2 cups of water in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat and then turn off the stovetop. Allow to steep for 20 minutes.

  3. Strain ginger-infused water with a mesh sieve into a container and add whole mint leaves. Refrigerate for at least one hour.

  4. Remove mint leaves and serve cold. Before heading off on a road trip, transfer to an insulated water bottle to keep the tea chilled and fresh.
