Tesla Dog Mode and Other Cool Canine Car Features

Posted by Billy Francis

No matter where the road leads you, having your best friend along for the ride can make any trip more fun. Cars aren’t always the most comfortable environment for a pup, but some models are better suited to furry passengers than others. The best cars for dogs are built low to the ground for a quick and comfortable potty break departure, have plenty of cargo space, and are durable. But these doggy dream machines come equipped with extra bells and whistles designed just for your canine copilot.

Tesla Dog Mode gives the electric car even more curb appeal, allowing you to safely leave your vehicle to run a quick errand while your pooch stays inside with the windows closed. The setting maintains the car at a constant temperature that will keep your canine comfortable. The large screen displays the message, “My owner will be back soon” accompanied by the temperature inside, so passersby know that Fido isn’t at any risk. If this feature has you sold, Tesla model X is the roomiest option for dog owners. This model also boasts the largest panoramic windshield in the world, which is great for pups who like to watch the world go by while you drive.

Volvo V60

Nervous pups who shy away from long car journeys will discover a peaceful place to ride inside the Volvo V60. Designed to quieten the noise outside, the smooth ride should lull your best friend to sleep in no time. This sleek vehicle comes with a hands-free liftgate and has a low cargo floor for easy access. If you want to fit your new car with more accessories, like a load compartment divider, protective steel grill and a gate, the dog lovers at Volvo will help fit them all. As an added incentive, Volvo will donate $10 to The Petfinder Foundation when you purchase any canine car accessory.

Jeep Wrangler

Jeep Wrangler is custom-built for people and pups seeking adventure. Dogs who love nothing more than leaping through the wilderness have a tendency to get covered from nose to tail in mud, but that doesn’t mean your car has to pay the price. The Wrangler's interior is completely washable and is equipped with drain plugs to remove excess water after you’re done hosing it down.

Subaru Outback

Outdoor lovers are likely already familiar with the Subaru Outback. This car can usually be found parked along hidden dirt roads and meandering through national parks. Backpacks and tents aren’t the only things that can fit in this dog-friendly vehicle. Four-legged travelers will love the large trunk with a flat load floor for balance. For more room, the back seats can be folded flat as well, so all of Fido’s travel necessities can come along for the ride, too. If your puppy has been trained for travel in a carrier, the trunk has cargo hooks to secure it safely. When you’re ready to join the Subaru family, upgrade to the Onyx Edition which features water-repellent leather seats for easy cleaning of muddy paw prints.

More than just a pet-friendly car, the company also hosts adoption events across the country and collects pet supplies for local animal shelters as part of the Subaru Loves Pets initiative.

Chrysler Pacifica

Big packs who are more into cruising than offroading should consider the spacious Chrysler Pacifica. This mighty minivan has power sliding doors, so there’s no need to juggle your pup’s bags and hold the door open for him. The low floor makes it easy for him to hop inside, and the Pacifica can also be fitted with ramps on the side and rear of the vehicle to allow senior dogs to enter easily. There’s ample room to pack all his belongings out of harm's way in the Stow ‘n Go underseat storage. When you’re ready to hit the road, choose Fido’s ideal temperature with the three-zone automatic climate control system. Upgrades include FamCam, an overhead camera in the rear of the vehicle that displays on the central-console, and Stow ‘n Vac® integrated vacuum to clean up after your pooch.

Honda Odyssey

Honda has finally found a solution to messy mutts trampling dirty paws all over car interiors. The Honda Odyssey comes with a HondaVAC, a built-in vacuum cleaner that makes it possible to clean the interior of your car when you’re at the dog park, beach, or on the road. Large pups can spread out in the spacious cargo area and can enjoy even more sprawling room if you fold the third row of seats down flat. Sparkling seats and a huge interior aren’t the only benefit of this vehicle. The Odyssey is also equipped with CabinWatch to give drivers a view of Fido on the touchscreen monitor, CabinTalk that allows drivers to tell Fido if he’s being a good boy through a microphone, and CabinControl to adjust the temperature.
