My adoption experience.

Burlington County Animal Alliance of New Jersey

This review does not reflect the overall value of work this place does to provide animals with homes. But it does reflect my personal adoption experience. I’m only sharing this for the purpose of helping others who may live in a similar environment as me, in the hope of helping you avoid disappointment. I’m a professional certified dog trainer who is fear-free and non-aversive, and my wife works in Vet Med as a practice manager. We recently attempted to adopt a dog, but the dog’s breed, guessed by the rescue, became a factor. This is a common issue among animal rescues. (And I know they don’t know the dog's actual breed because they told me so themselves, and I have the text still.) However, due to the breed of dog and the restrictions imposed by my apartment complex, we faced challenges. Nevertheless, it’s a loose policy, and knowing that rescues often guess the breed, I explained the situation and received approval from my landlord to adopt the dog. Despite successfully persuading my landlord to waive the restriction for this particular dog and receiving the green light for adoption, the volunteer still denied me the ability to adopt. They stated that the “founder” would not allow them to adopt out the dog to an apartment complex with breed restrictions, despite having approval from the landlord. This decision was made because the “founder” has had too many dogs rehomed due to such environments. This statement alone indicates they did not read my application or contact my references. As a dog trainer, I've worked with numerous behavioral cases that have been re-homed, and I fully understand the impact such experiences can have on a dog's mental state. I’ve even had behavioral challenges to overcome with my own dog and rehoming her never came across my mind. She lived a very normal and happy life and we over came a lot of challenges together and I would do all over again with her if I could. Karma taught me a lot about being a good human, and my wife and I are not people who just re-home a dog because it gets too hard.

This is a common issue with rescues. I've encountered it with clients who have tried to adopt dogs from other rescues while facing similar situations. Having to resort to obtaining puppies from a store, or private listings.

If you live in an apartment, don’t bother filling out an application here. Save yourself the disappointment.
