Finding the dog park

Memorial Park Dog Park

It's a great park

When you enter from Gran Ellen Drive, turn immediately to the left in the direction of two wrong way signs. Not to worry! You'll find a hidden driveway to the right that takes you down hill to the lower parking lot and lake. Cross the wooden-planked bridge. The dog park, a wooded lot, is up the hill past the lavatory building. It has a double-gated entry.

Is it being let go?

Memorial Park Dog Park

Beautiful site. You and your dog will track lots of dust home. The last time that my dog and I visited in the spring of 2021, the fresh water source was not working and no poop bags were available. Also, do not let your dog swim in the lake. The water doesn't look pure and it's not.

Good place to walk a dog, HOWEVER, kep yourself and you dog out os creeks and rivers.

North Oconee River Greenway

My dog had diarrhea for a week after I let him run in the river north of the University Remote Parking area off College Station Road. It was adjacent to one of the trails.

Trails, yes, waterways, no.

Spectacularly good site

Wiggley Field Southeast Clarke Park Dog Park

There are three fields. Each is quite good. If your dog likes to run through tall grass, the biggest one, #3, fills the bill. The fresh water source immediately adjacent to the fields is dependable.

I've been told that this was a UGA School of Forestry project. If so, then they did good!

Since Athens can get so hot in summer, more shade trees would hit the spot.

Great location!

Sandy Creek Park Dog Parks

The dog parks are a cut above every dog walk area but Wiggley Field; and I believe that you can take your leashed dog on the nature trails.

The only thing that I would add would be a very remote, beach-ish spot where those who own water dogs, like Labrador Retrievers, could toss them tennis balls to fetch from the water. My understanding is that the lake was designed for flood control, not to supply drinking water, so it's doubtful that a few dogs swimming would make much difference. The water is pure enough to allow people to swim except if there are algae blooms. https://www.accgov.com/7835/History

Area set aside for unleashed dogs is gone.

UGA Recreational Sports Complex

My two sisters, both grads, claim that the fenced in dog walk area was said to be "the finest in the land." It was legendary. And that's all it is, today. A long lost legend, replaced at some point with what appears to be a lightly used paramilitary obstacle course. The intramural playing fields, themselves, are marked "No dogs." What remains are trails on Herrick Lake Forest Preserve and adjacent university property. These trails are equipped with occasional baggie/trash stations, on which dogs must be kept leashed. Perhaps the powers that be can set up a new fenced in dog running area in the general vicinity of the UGA Soccer Stadium at 2330 S Milledge Ave south of the Loop.
