Not Great

Big Pines Mountain House

The motel was not good. The bed had actual dips in it that you could see just looking at it. That made for a horribly uncomfortable night. Also, the room wasn’t particularly clean or in good shape. And the ceilings/walls are so thin! We heard everything from the people above us. There was also nowhere for my dog to use the restroom. He peed on some rocks, but there was nowhere for him to do any other business. So we walked a few blocks down to some grass. Supposedly there is private beach access (it even mentions it on the sign), but I wouldn’t know because when I checked in, the girl literally only asked me for my credit card and then gave me the key card and told me my room number.

I went back to try and ask multiple times, but there was no one in the office or the office was locked and I wasn’t able to enter. I didn’t expect luxury for the price compared to other places in the area, but I did expect a little more. I would definitely suggest trying 10 Crows BBQ and sitting on the patio with your dogs - they were AWESOME! Honestly, that dinner was the only good part of the stay. We did learn they have a hotel and are dog friendly, so we’ll be checking them out next time.

Great dog relief area

La Quinta by Wyndham Gallup

Overall, it’s a decent hotel & I have no complaints about the stay at all. What will bring me back was the gated dog relief area. It was so nice to be able to let my dog off leash to do his business. There are also waste bags provided, if you don’t have any and I didn’t see any evidence of owners not cleaning up after their pets. I will definitely stay here every time I drive through this area.
